Sudden stomach issues.. what is going on with me?
Recently, over the past couple of weeks, when my stomach is empty, I sometimes get an unpleasant feeling in my stomach, it kind of burns and makes me nauseous. The only way I can describe it is my stomach feels acidic. I’m inclined to think it has to do with stomach acid, as once I eat, the acidic feeling subsides. It’s a different feeling than how I generally experience hunger.. never have had that burning/nausea before.
Also, I’ve been feeling like I can’t get enough food.. like I eat a meal that should hold me over for at least a couple of hours, but my body seems to want food all the time. I kind of feel like a starving person at times, even though my stomach isn’t growling, I have a craving to eat, like I can’t get enough food.
I have been diagnosed with both anxiety and IBS; I’m what they call a stomach responder to anxiety. Never had a problem with ulcers or heartburn, though I’ve wondered if the stomach responsiveness to my anxiety and worry would lead to ulcers eventually. I have been fairly stressed, worried, and anxious lately.
Any ideas as to what this might be and whether I should be concerned?

Perhaps acid reflux. I’m the same way. Very anxious, IBS, yadda yadda. But now I get acid reflux. It helps if I eat a small snack every few hours and drink LOTS of water
I just looked at the symptoms and I don’t know if that’s it.. no chest pain, no heartburn, really none of the other symptoms other than the unpleasant feeling in my stomach and nausea.
I have always had coffee in the morning before eating anything, with no problems. This morning I had coffee and after an appointment, I felt really yucky, acid stomach and nausea, so much that I didn’t really want to eat but did because I thought I’d feel better. The acid feeling is going away, but the nausea persists..
I never really get the chest pain or heart burn, either. But I get like.. a sick “sour” feeling in my stomach, if that makes any sense. I think maybe thats what the acid you were talking about feels like. Usually I fix it by eating carbs. Something about having bread when I feel this way makes it better. And avoiding dairy helps, too.
Yeah, that’s kind of how it felt, it’s a weird sensation that’s hard to describe. Unpleasant, sour, acidic, bordering on painful, then combined with nausea, ugh.
ugh its awful.
I went on a road trip yesterday and had the worst acid reflux. Probably because I didn’t have breakfast. But it lasted alllllllll day
It is not a good idea to seek a diagnosis for illness online from people who you do not know and who cannot see you to examine you. I would suggest you seek medical advice locally.
I realize that..
Before getting all alarmist, I came here to see if anyone had experience with the symptoms, might know what I’m talking about, that sort of thing. You’d be amazed at the wealth of information stored in Flutherites’ brains.
I agree with @pinkparaluies it’s probably acid reflux. I have it as well and it usually helps to eat, empty stomach never feels good, or take some Zantac 75…I’m not sure why heh but that’s what the doctor told me to do- really helps.
I’ve never had to use antacids or anything before, but I have a thing of Tums left over from an ex that I might have to bust into to see if it helps.
That would be highly doubtful, considering I haven’t slept with a guy in well past the requisite time period. :P
My stomach doesn’t “burn” exactly, but I do feel horribly nauseated and unpleasant when I’m hungry. Not like starving for days on end hungry, but only if it’s been a few hours from my last meal. I think that somehow my caffeine addiction is catching up with me, because I’ve been getting the jitters from normal amounts of coffee. I hear caffeine makes anxiety way worse, so maybe that’s what’s going on.
My stomach “burned.” My doctor first gave me xantac, which took care of it for a year or so, and then switched me to prilosec when xantac stopped working so well.
I don’t know how old you are, but as we age, our bodies stop working as well, and in many cases, folks get chronic excess stomach acid. You should try the Tums.
I would have said this, but it doesn’t account for your hunger. That’s where the pregnant thing came from. Do you usually get more hungry in the fall? Our bodies naturally try to bulk us up in preparation for the privations of winter. We have not yet evolved past that.
@daloon – I’ve never experienced what I’m feeling now. It’s not every day, but there have been a few days were I know I’ve eaten enough to not be hungry, but my body seems to really want to eat again. It’s kind of like feeling like a starving person, kind of primal drive and desire to shovel food in my face. My pattern is usually to have coffee, not get hungry till after, get very hungry, eat a big meal, and then eat a smaller meal or snack later if I’m hungry again. I’ve been trying to eat smaller, more frequent meals, so I should be getting plenty of calories, but my body has been craving that full feeling you get from eating more than enough food. It’s not just that, though, I don’t understand the somewhat panicky feeling of wanting to eat constantly.
@MissAnthrope Is this changing pattern to help you lose weight? Well, whatever the reason, if you can stick it out for a month or two without giving in, I’ll bet your body stops craving the gut busting meals.
Hah! Easy for me to say, Mr. never even tried to be on a diet because he knows he doesn’t have the self-control!
Indirectly, yes.. I have an unusually slow metabolism normally unless I’m consistently exercising, so I know my regular pattern of eating one big meal a day really doesn’t help matters. I can eat the same amount of food a “normal” person does to maintain their weight and I gain weight. It’s hard for me to eat breakfast because I’m simply uninterested in food pre-coffee. The Blood Type Diet says type A’s require a bit of a metabolic kickstart in the mornings, which can be achieved with coffee and it does seem to be true and to work.
I just thought I might benefit from eating more normally, breaking it up over the course of the day.
I was also going to vote for pregnant only because that is exactly how I feel right now.
@RedPowerLady – Hmmm… see, I would also chalk it up to hormones, because I know I’ve felt like that during PMS before, but it’s a bit early for that to be the case, I think. That ravenous feeling is weird.
@MissAnthrope is there anything going on in your life that’s maybe causing you anxiety? I’ve had CRAZY stress lately and I’ve been getting similar symptoms, the other night I was STARVING, I made dinner sat down ate about four bites and suddenly felt like I was going to lose it. it would also account for the acid stomach too,
here’s an interesting take on it: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/acid-reflux-stress.html
@christine215 – Yeah, definitely things involving school, money, work causing anxiety, stress, and worry. I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed.
@MissAnthrope It is a horrible feeling. I really particularly hate it. I wonder if it could be hormones. That is a good idea.
I hear that eating small, frequent meals makes your metabolism go faster. Maybe it’s making you burn more calories.
Actually, the other time in my life that I felt ravenous like this and this weird about eating, thinking about it constantly, etc. was when I was on Effexor. But I’m not on any meds at the moment.
I took a couple of Tums earlier because I was actually hungry (stomach rumbling) and it started to feel like light heart burn. I think it did help, though the feeling isn’t entirely gone. So the jury’s out on that one, but I’ll keep trying it.
Thanks for the suggestions and help, guys. :)
I had the same issue a couple of times, both bouts of my stomach pain lasted for a couple of weeks, I was scared to have an empty stomach because it was burning unless I was full. Drinking milk helped me too. Tums sometimes helped. Both time eventually just went away but I wonder if I had ulcers. You should probably go to the doctor if your stomach pain /doesn’t subside in a week or two.. try cutting out fatty/oily foods – could it be your gallbladder? Hope you feel better soon!
I have pretty serious acid reflux even with medication and the added benefit of being born without a valve to close off my stomach from my esophagus. Last year i had about half of my stomach removed due to a perforation in my stomach so now it is even more sensitive. I do not eat 3 large meals a day but rather 4–6 small meals and try not to eat heavily after 6pm if my reflux is particularly bad. for me toast and/or crackers can help get rid of excess acid/ sour stomach. This may sound off but coca-cola can also help calm my stomach. it this last more than a week I would call my doctor.
Probably acid reflux, though it could possibly be a bacterial infection. Please consult a doctor. The doctor will give you some tests to determine if it is bacterial. If bacterial, then a treatment of antibiotics will likely relieve the discomfort. Otherwise, you’ll probably be prescribed something such as Omeprazole to turn off the acid pump. In the meantime, there are a number of OTC treatments available. Also, don’t eat within 3 hours of going to bed, and try elevating the head of your bed (put bricks under the feet of your bed at the head end).
