My NY bank doesn’t have locations in SF and I need to open an account out there. Anything with good hours & lots of ATMs would be best. What banks do you suggest/not suggest?

Maybe chase. Maybe. You’re pretty much screwed with all your bank options here. I use Chase (formerly WaMu), and haven’t been too displeased with them, so I suppose that works.
I’m sure Ben or kevbo will start waxing about USAA, but many of us can’t join their little club.
Avoid Bank of America. They like to charge fees for everything, even on no-surcharge ATMs. Plus they took bailout money and were still giving execs bonuses, not helping consumers.. you know, business as usual.
My mom and step-dad banked with Wells Fargo for forever. I also had my first accounts with them and only have good things to say, but haven’t used them in about 10 years so I can’t speak about their practices currently.
I second Chase. Avoid BofA at all costs.
@Cartman : thanks, i’ll definitely check it out… what area are you moving to?
Sooner or later they all do stuff to screw things up. I thinl Bof A has the most ATM’s but if my balance drops below $2000 they charge $10/mo
I ended up at Wells for my daughter once after my bank merged and then that bank merged and then Wells bought that bank. They charged a monthly fee if the balance dropped below $1000. We only paid 1 or 2 online checks/mo and they charged $4.95. Then one month they changed the cycle and ended up charging 2 service fees. Imagine, almost $20 in fees on an account with a balance of over $750 and only 1 small check written on the account. When I complained they offered to take off the 2nd service fee. BuhBye Wells.
I was happy with Wamu for 5 years. No ATM fees and CD interest was twice B of A. I’m suspicious about Chase and the ATM’s are only at branches which are fewer than B of A.
I heard 1st Republic is one of the few that didn’t get hurt in the mortgage mess and pays nice interest but not so many ATM’s.
