Skynet? Wow, you may have bigger problems than viruses on your computer.
yeah, on second thought; if your computer has become self aware, you might need to get it looked at by a professional.
How to get rid of that skynet one: here
I THOUGHT I had a good anti-virus program on here. But it started running slow & I had suspicions that something as wrong. I took it to my local computer guru & he did a 3 day professional scan on it. I had 91infections on here! Needless to say, he loaded a better program. My advise to you is to take it & have it professionally scanned to get rid of your problems there. It’s worth the money.
I had the same problem about a year ago, and took my computer to the Geek Squad at Best Buy. The backed up my documents and got rid of the virus for pretty cheap, and installed an anti-virus and anti-spyware program called Webroot. It works great, and I haven’t had a virus in over a year. I know a lot of people have bad feelings about Geek Squad and Best Buy, but in my experience, they were great.
In all seriousness though, MBAM (see my first post) should take care of any malware on your computer, if not; there are more complex methods but that should get 90% of them
@jbfletcherfan May I inquire as to what you were and currently are using for security? (I am one such professional ;-] )
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities you are one of the very very few lucky ones
i tried MalwareBytes but I didn’t work. and I can’t take it to a professional without getting in trouble for it.. my parents bought me this laptop five years ago but they don’t understand that I need a new one because of like the battery and such.
@kayyyyleigh what exactly does it didn’t work mean? Which part didn’t work? Could you get it downloaded at all? Installed? Couldn’t get it to run? Meet me halfway on troubleshooting here, I kinda know what I’m doing. Also, why would you get in trouble for having a computer virus?
@patg7590 Sure, I’d be happy to share….....I HAD StopSign by eAcceleration. My guy loaded Avira, & A-squared Free for anti-virus & Abexo Free Registry Cleaner. That’s also made all the difference as far as speed. Cleaned out crap I didn’t need. The Avira runs every day at noon. I run the other manually every Saturday. I’ve had this on here for several months now & it’s picked up a lot of crap that it’s deleted.
@kayyyyleigh He also loaded MalwareBytes, & it seems to be working well on this. It takes several hours for it to run, but it also lists stuff that it’s deleted. I’m really happy with these programs I have now.
I believe it’s AVG that’s supposed to be a good program, too.
@patg7590 Again, what’s your opinion on these programs?
@jbfletcherfan let’s see here:
StopSign? Never heard of it, sounds awul
Avira- pretty reputable, has a decent following. I’d say either that or AVG is your best free bet.
It is usually a bad idea to run more than one security software application simultaneously, as they can interfere with each other and fight over system resources, but I can’t say whether or not A-Squared Free overlaps with Avira as I have never used A2Free.
I prefer CCleaner to Abexo Free, but thats just a matter of track record and personal preference.
For free protection, I’d say you’re doing pretty well.
The main thing you get from paid protection that you don’t get from free software is real time monitoring. Meaning that your computer is constantly defending itself, rather than just scanning for bad things that have already gotten in.
I can readily recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and ESET Smart Secuirty 4 as the best paid programs, they run about $60 a year.
whatever you do please stay away from terrible paid programs such as Norton, McAffe, BitDefender, Panda, PC-Cillin. (there’s tons more but those are the worst)
or, you could just save yourself all this headache and buy a Mac :]
I used malwarebytes to get rid of a similar virus before and it worked fine. this time I tried to use it, in safe mode, and it deleted it for a few hours but it came back and it never got rid of skynet, it always said it could not be deleted. and now it’s to the point where I can’t use it, i cant see or use my desktop icons and i can’t re install it. and I would be in trouble because my parents got it for me in the idea that nothing was gonnah happen and it was gonnah last forever. haha
@kayyyyleigh try running it not in safe mode and keep scanning and removing until you get a clean pass (no malicious items detected) make sure MBAM is able to update and get the latest virus definitions from the internet.
also, some prelimnary questions:
Do you have access to another computer?
Do you have all of your data backed up elsewhere.?
but I can’t get malwarebytes to work at all now and I have access to my parents computer, it’s a windows vista, mines just a xp. and no I don’t have it backed up which is also why I could get in trouble because all of mine, my parents, cousins, and grandparents iPod and iPhone are connected to my computer.
@kayyyyleigh can you be more specific? When you double click on it, does anything happen?
when I’m in safe mode, it says files cannot be found and asks if I want to browse for it. if I try to install it, it says there is an error either code 2 or 5. not in safe mode, the “security tool” virus has a bubble from the toolbar saying that whatever I am trying to use is an infected item trying to give away my information.
@kayyyyleigh sounds like Windows is damaged; you need to get the machine looked at by a professional (NOT GEEK SQUAD), are you in Michigan per chance?
noooo. Vermont:/ and the only place I can bring it to is either staples or best buy.
@patg7590 Well, I’m glad you’re okay with what I’m running. I wouldn’t touch Norton with a 10’ pole! AcAfee was on here free when I bought this…7 years ago! It worked okay, I guess. It’s been a good computer (Dell). StopSign was $58 a year & look what it got me.
I specifically asked Mr. Guru if I could save time & run the two programs at the same time & he said yes. I’ve been doing so with no problems.
(this is interesting, I could talk computers all day)
@kayyyyleigh Your computer isn’t going to last forever, no matter what your parents think. At 7 years old, I baby this a lot. I also do my defrag every month. A little extra maintenance & care goes a long way. Watch what you download & don’t load big programs on it. A crashed hard drive is usually caused by overloading.
