Is there anything that hasn't changed in the last 50 years?

Asked by simone54 (7642points) October 30th, 2009

It seems like every month someone makes something better. Telephones, cars, tools, even toiler paper (despite George Costanza claim) is made better or more efficiently. I am wondering is there any common useful thing that hasn’t changed in the last 50 years?

To some extent, I think this depends on how you’re defining the question. Take, for example, hammers. Yes, I’m sure there are some variations of hammers being made today that wouldn’t, strictly speaking, have been available 50 years ago. But they do still also make (and people still also use) hammers that are identical to ones you would have found 50 years ago. I’m sure there are many examples of things like that (straightforward tools and mechanical devices, food products, etc.), where some “better or more efficient” kinds might exist now, but they haven’t exactly replaced the simpler, more basic kinds… those are still available too.

Levi’s jeans.

As @derekfnord points out, we can buy the original version right along side the new, modern version of things, such as toasters, wooden cooking spoons, cotton t-shirts, and on and on.

Chuck Taylor’s Converse. I mean, there are some esoteric nuances, like area of provenance and toe cap size, but they have ultimately retained the aesthetic.

Vans Co. is a few years away.

@peedub, I was going to say Chucks! I wore them in high school in the early ‘70s. Black hi-tops.

@PandoraBoxx Very nice. Still have them? Cuz peedub wants em…

70’s Chucks are the best.

My appetite, it hasn’t changed in 50 years, I am always ready to eat, especially if it is something delicious and fattening!

Nope, I wore them into college, and they eventually fell apart. They were awesome, I was just contemplating whether I’m too old to buy another pair. I’ve also been eyeing these babies. Shoe of my childhood. Awesome!!!

@PandoraBoxx – I love them! LL Bean usually has a similar looking imitation, but you can’t beat the real thing.

@rooeytoo I just bought some LL Bean Converse on eBay. I think they’re from the 80’s, look like Vision Street Wear.

Coca-Cola or Coke =)

Not so, @Lorenita. Coke’s rollout of a changed formula was very controversial.

Even though they supposedly went back to the old Coke with “Coke classic,” it definitely does not taste the way it did when I was a kid. It had a crackling flavor then that was replaced by something syrupy and insipid, and the real thing has never come back.

@Jeruba Coke (like many soft drinks) was once made with cane sugar as the primary sweetener. Now (like most) it’s made with corn syrup as the primary sweetener.

Yes. And that made a huge difference to the taste. That happened within the past 50 years.

I’d like to say that Ivory soap is unchanged, but probably like almost any commercial household product it has at some time over these decades announced itself as “New! Improved!”
