What website do you think is extremely outdated and needs a makeover?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) October 30th, 2009

Is there a website that you enjoy but wish they would bring it up to the 21st century? Does it have animated gifs? Are the colors and backgrounds plain? Are there different frames? Don’t you think it’s time they did a major redesign?

Please include URLs and any ideas you have that could spice it up a bit!

Two examples for me are: IMDB and The Weather Channel

Photobucket is pretty ugly.

I second the vote for imdb.com.

Rotten Tomatoes. rottentomatoes.com There is way too much stuff going on.

I know print media is dead and all that- but more people need to take a hint and put the biggest important stuff ‘above the fold’. I’ll scroll down if I’m feeling frisky.

Myspace needs a facelift too. Too much going on and it’s all ads.

Huffington Post- huffingtonpost.com Once again- it’s too disjointed. There are too many columns imho and it just looks dated.

@IBERnineD YES! craigslist for sure.

erichw1504's avatar

@gemiwing Yes, Rottentomatoes is way too graphic heavy, I like simpler websites so you know where content is and it doesn’t hurt my eyes.

@IBERnineD @J0E How could you say Craigslist? The simplicity is the beauty. In a world that is so often over-designed and under-functional they stand out as a beacon of simplicity and amazing function (wow…beacon? I didn’t even think I would drop that there…but there ya go).

J0E's avatar

@mleo Simplicity can be obtained without being ugly.

@mleo I agree with @J0E it’s so not pretty. Just a few tweaks would make it so much better. Check this out

Oh my God! My professional website could so use an upgrade!

mleo's avatar

@IBERnineD I had no idea it craigslist could look so good! That’s actually pretty hot. I owe you and @J0E an apology :D My vote now officially lies with Craigslist – as long as we’re talking simple and elegant changes.

IBERnineD's avatar

@mleo I’m glad you agree! Isn’t the tweaked one pretty?!?!

mleo's avatar

@IBERnineD Yup – it’s pretty amazing. So simple still. But so much easier to consume.

Amazon.com And xkcd.com when Geocities was shut down ;-)

@gggritso I love the way Google looks. It’s simple, it’s clean, and it loads fast.

IBERnineD's avatar

@gggritso maybe you would like this?

gggritso's avatar

@J0E A website can be simple, clean, fast and beautiful. @IBERnineD I do love that! Except for the logo. On the other hand, I’m wearing a Google t-shirt right now. Hmm.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@gggritso Google is probably the best designed website out there (except for this one of course). Its simple, without ads or pop-up surveys, just perfect.

My vote would be Youtube. Imagine if it was as clean and well organized as Hulu.

J0E's avatar

@gggritso A search engine shouldn’t be more than what it is.

gggritso's avatar

Um, the question asked which website is outdated, not what website is poorly designed. I didn’t say Google is poorly designed.

J0E's avatar

Outdated infers that it looks old, Google looks fine.

Geocities died on Monday!

<edit> aw… @vincentt mentioned it before me. I screen-cap’ed XKCD for the memories though. :)</edit>

mleo's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Google is “without ads”? Really? What about the (up to) 3 ads on the top of the page and the 8 ads on the right of the page? Sure, there’s no display advertising, but let’s not kid ourselves and think that google is anything but an advertising company.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@mleo Compare the homepage of Google to any other search engine and compare the amount of adds. I could tell you who wins, but I don’t want to spoil the fun.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities (Actually, I think it’s mainly Yahoo, AOL, and MSN [creatures of the past] that are awful in that regard. They have problem with too much content up front more than just advertisements though. There is a reason smart folks avoid them. :P)

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@mleo Google is much, much more than an “advertising company.”
Is that how they make there money? Hell yes.
Is that the whole reason the exist? Fuck no!

I think @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities’ point is that at least Google’s advertising scheme is a lot less intrusive than that of most other internet entities.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@Beta_Orionis True, and I am pretty impressed with Bing so far.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities Agreed! Very pretty. Although… Now that I’m thinking about it, the uncluttered interfaces aside from Google are mainly meta engines (Dogpile, Ask, etc,) so maybe they shouldn’t don’t count in this discussion.

google played a little game with us on Hallowe’en! i don’t want ads. i like the way it is what it is. more doesn’t always mean better. now i have to go see the tomato one.

Whatever you do, keep .gifs and flash OUT, please.

As for websites desperately in need of redesign, look at this one:
http://quizland.com/

They could improve it by getting rid of the children’s colors, and then putting the information in under headers, in rows or columns
