Time travelling creating energy?

Asked by Meagainandagin (45points) October 30th, 2009

If we travel back in time to meet ourselves isn’t there more mass in the universe therefore more energy?

What exactly do you mean by “energy”?

oratio's avatar

I guess that’s true.

@erichw1504
E=mc^2 mass equals energy.

erichw1504's avatar

Well in that case, yes.

ok, EVERYONE CALM DOWN. Mattbrowne will be here any minute and we can get this whole thing sorted out

In the same way that sunlight adds energy to the earth, which, if you erroneously see earth as a closed system, seems to violate the 2nd law of thermodynamics.
But just as you have to see the sun and earth together in a shared system, you must see space and time as unified.
It may have increased the amount of energy at one point in space time, but at another point in space time, the amount of energy is reduced by an equal amount, thus leading to equilibrium within the spacetime continuum.

Ask Doc Brown.

@patg7590 I am not so sure. I heard he was lured into a trap and is now frozen in carbonite.

patg7590's avatar

@oratio No matter, mattbrowne will still come through; even if that means going back in time to not get frozen in carbonite, he can do it.

All I know is that if I traveled back in time to meet myself I’d have a lot of questions to ask myself and a lot of explaining to do.

I don’t want to reiterate and belabour this point when going through how I think time travel works, that I’M OF COURSE NOT A EXPERT THESE ARE MY IDEAS.

I’ll try to explain time travel as I see best to who ever wants to read it.
First lets get this straight.
Do you see time as a piece of film each frame being each instance and each instance being a new you in the frame?
Or do you see it as moving through another dimension such as walking and with each step (step in time or space) and with each step isn’t a new you it’s just you further along one dimension.

I’ve listened to a brief history of time and have spoke to many people and Einstein’s theory of relativity and I see no reason why it’s the first one, if you think I’m wrong let me know. We all have our own time! Remember that.

The atoms that make up me now, ten minutes in the future and 10 minutes in the past are 99% the same. There are no two me’s in time. Like I said ^ up there. If I move along a dimension I SEE NO REASON why there would be two me’s, it’s not like the frame idea, plus where would these atoms appear from that make up this new me? Plus many, many more questons.
Going back in time the atoms that make up me ten minutes ago are in the time machine as me these are subject to there own time, these atoms will not go back in time as they’re in the time machine. So these atoms can’t go back in time to make my former self and I see no reason my former self would just appear out of thin air. IF YOU THINK YOU KNOW EXPLAIN.

We could visit ourselves from 20 years ago as these are different atoms (if what I read about your brain cells regenerating is true) all together. Also I’M AMBIVALENT AND UNSURE ABOUT THIS the past maybe very different, I wont go into it here, but it’s a sort of butterfly effect in reverse by you not being t/here.
