How much do you use your imagination?

Asked by wundayatta (58741points) October 30th, 2009

Would you call yourself an “imaginative” person? I’m leaving the definition of imagination to you.

If you do think you’re imaginative, why? How do you use your imagination in daily life? What was the most imaginative thing you remember doing?

If not, what do think imagination is? Do you think it’s a good or a bad thing? Do you wish you had more imagination? Where do you think imagination comes from?

A LOT. My imagination is my best friend.

SpatzieLover's avatar

I love my imagination and work at it so I don’t lose it.

I’m a fantastic gift-giver because of it…and an even better lover and parent due to my use of it!

How boring life must be for those that have lost their inner-child’s mind eye!

Val123's avatar

@SpatzieLover YA! GA!! pulls your hair and runs away giggling!

dpworkin's avatar

We all use our imagination 100% of the time.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@pdworkin I know people that are never imaginative. They are so sad!

erichw1504's avatar

I’m always imagining new ways to imagine a way of imagining an imagination that imagines imagination.

Facade's avatar

I’m always playing out scenarios in my have that have never/will never happen. So I’d say I’m an imaginative person.

dpworkin's avatar

@SpatzieLover They may ot be imaginative, but in order to negotiate their way through the world they are forced to use their imagination all the tiem. As just one example: color is not inherent in nature, it is psychophysical, and requires imagining.

aprilsimnel's avatar

A lot. I write.

Val123's avatar

@aprilsimnel Me too! Just for myself though. I’ve never published anything.

Contantly and daily; it’s only ever good when I’m rading a good book other wise it’s dark, twisted and painful…. A better description is here..

Always
As I said in another thread, I once won an award for daydreaming in elementary school.
It was officially titled: The Spaceman Spiff (after Calvin and Hobbes) Award For Interplanetary Travel Without Leaving The Classroom aka Pay More Attention In Class Award. I’m thinking about framing it.

whoa! Had to do a double take! I was glancing at the detail as I was flipping out of this question and I thought it said, “Do you consider yourself an imaginary person”! It was like, here we go again!!!

A lot, maybe more than is comfortable for many people because I’m continuously told I’m “weird”, good weird but definitely weird and I know it’s because of the things I find whimsy and joy in and choose to share with people around me.

Val123's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence I only friend weird people, you know.

All the time. And I can’t understand the concept of boredom because of it. How can you be bored? Think about something and entertain yourself!

All the time for me, too. It ranges from daydreaming and drawing or painting to planning new gardens or arrangements of furniture in the house to reading cookbooks and then inventing recipes. I also write and I tell stories. I act on stage and in independent film and use my imagination for that, too. When I had a “real job” I got paid for being creative, so that was a great job for me.

I even use my imagination on my wardrobe, which is why people often tell me that I have an unusual sense of style. They’re just jealous.

However, in school I was pegged as a day dreamer and always shocked teachers by still being able to get good grades. Unfortunately, my teachers weren’t as creative those of @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities. I never got The Spaceman Spiff Award For Interplanetary Travel Without Leaving The Classroom aka Pay More Attention In Class Award, although I am certain I was eligible for it.

And yes, a lot of folks consider me to be weird. But if I am weird, then weird is a good thing. In fact, most of my friends are weird, too, which is part of what makes them interesting. And they all own huge numbers of books, just like me!

I’m sorry, I’m too busy daydreaming I’m Batman right now.

without my imagination, I would be as entertaining as this guy.

I feel like I’m a more sensible imaginative thinker, considering I often daydream or interpret things in a realistic way, something that could actually happen. For instance, I can’t imagine myself driving a Halo 3 warthog into a white abyss. Driving into a big mound of snow, maybe, but not that. The only time I think irrationally is when I am actually dreaming, asleep, which shows I can be imaginative.

wundayatta's avatar

Ah well, I don’t feel so weird any more. However it always kills me when people say they can’t think of something. Or people say they can’t think up a story. Or they don’t know what to do with an instrument.

For Gods Sake! Play with the damn thing!

When people think they can’t tell a story, I tell them to imagine they are watching a movie inside their head, and then just tell what’s happening on the screen. Our minds are constantly supplying missing detail or just plain making up stuff. All we need do is tap into what is already going on.

Darwin's avatar

Doesn’t everybody watch movies inside their heads? I know I have ever since I was very small. When I write fiction I am simply describing the movie that I have been watching internally.

Blondesjon's avatar

First I came up with boredom then I came up with imagination.

OpryLeigh's avatar

Too bloody much! I have a very over active imagination and that is very rarely a good thing at the moment!

rangerr's avatar

Too much.

@Grisaille ZAP!! POW!! (I’m Cat Woman. Really, I am. “This is purrrrrfectly wonderful, dahling!”)

vicnav's avatar

I always use imagination, everyday. I have no idea If I really have any effect on the future but whenever I imange (or plan) my future or a comming event, it usually goes the way I want it. I imagine at different levels, from logical/realistic to fantasy or the future. Mostly it’s just a lot of ideas and the way I imagine life to be. Maybe It’s a connection to parallell universes who knows.

Lorenita's avatar

All the time, sometimes I imagine bad scenarios or sometimes extremely good ones.. I belive imagination is the foundation for everything.. If you dont dream, how can you ever achieve your goals?? It’s the starting point.
