What's the weirdest place you've ever had a panic attack?
For me, it was many years ago, and I was just walking into the local grocery store, when all of a sudden, I felt I just had to get out of there. Now this store has white tile floors, is open and airy and could be in no way viewed as claustrophobic, but once I was about twenty feet inside the door, I just had to get out of there. I didn’t even care if people could tell I was freaking out. I nearly ran out the exit door, hurried to my truck, and crawled in behind the steering wheel, panting and dizzy and freaking out. Once I calmed down, I drove home and stayed indoors until my wife came home from work. when I told her why I hadn’t bought groceries, she was concerned and confused. Eventually I saw my doctor and was prescribed the right medication to control the damn things.

Probably at the Annual City Fair.
My therapist’s office. I was talking about having figured out that I had panic attacks and once I realized it, I started having them frequently. I was describing one I’d had on a then-recent first date (thankfully the girl was really nice and understanding), and the next thing I know, I got hit by the whopper of panic attacks.
I kind of lost control of my facial muscles, had fluttering eyelids and my lips were doing this really weird thing, making it hard to talk. Ugh.. that was awful and kind of ridiculous.
In a basketball stadium where I was the only one there.
I think I’ve only ever had panic attacks in my bedroom. Which really just means I need to get out of there if I feel one coming on.
I’ve had plenty of them in public places. That’s totally normal. So I guess the weirdest place I’ve ever had one is in my bedroom, which is one of the few places where I’m actually comfortable and don’t worry about panicking. I’d gone downstairs to pee during a commercial break and was in a hurry to get back to my room before whatever I was watching came back on, so I’d taken the stairs two at a time. That got my heart and breathing rates up, and my body tricked itself into thinking I was having a panic attack, and so… I did. I felt so stupid. Heh.
At a family holiday party. There was just so much chaos and so much happening all at once that I started to freak. I had to step out and go sit in my car.
Oh and Once I had a panic attack when I was staring at myself in the mirror (because I forgot who I was… ) Long story.
I’ve only had them at home, except for one when I was driving to the airport & took a wrong exit.
I had one in my gyno’s office…..don’t ask LOL
I’ve only ever had one (sparked by hypochondria) and that was in my house. It was terrible because it was like once I realized what was going on, that just scared me even more and made it worse. I don’t want to ever have one again.
I find it interesting that they’re so common. I feel like they shouldn’t be.
I have them all the time, I think I’m use to them now.
@DominicX usually they are more of a problem for females, but males get em too, I guess. Must be something to do with the world we live in.
Public restroom
Where is that grunting coming from?!
in a closet at my ex girlfriends house
The weirdest place? Probably here, in fluther, when a certain m-d started getting on my case. This caused an (albeit virtual) mini panic attack.
My kitchen. I used to get them there all the time, but now it’s just an occasional thing.
I’ve been panic-free for quite a while now. But when I did have them, they occurred in my bedroom, which is kind of ridiculous. What place could feel more safe than your own bedroom?
Yeah I often have them in the apparent-safety of my own bed. I used to get really bad train fear, it got so bad that in trying to keep a panic attack down (I have this thing about not liking people knowing I am having one) I ended up barfing on this womans shoes.. I was so embarassed I told her I was pregnant. I still feel guilty to this day, she was so nice and supportive.. On the up side faking a pregnancy distracted me from the panic attack! Maybe I’m on to something there.
@drdoombot I think it is more common than you realize. I get them at night whenI am in bed and can’t sleep. Thankfully, the Xanax knocks me out quick enough to keep them from happening.
Yeah, my bed is the most common place for me to get them, too. I’ll even get them juuuuust as I’m drifting off to sleep. Awake for another 2 hours, then. :(
Does anyone have panic attacks that start in their mouth? I tried to explain it to my GP and he looked at me like I was mental. My tongue will start to feel thin like paper, but at the same time too big, and my teeth will feel huge in my mouth.. Just curious
