Cheapest way to move carload of possessions from Boston to Chicago?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) November 1st, 2009

Stuff needs to get from one basement to another during/around Thanksgiving weekend. I live in Chicago, and I need to transport it from Boston. Should I rent a uhaul? a car? If I rent either, won’t it be extremely expensive, especially since I am not returning the vehicle to the “home” location….just thought I would garner some advice!

You can rent a truck one-way. It’s probably the cheapest way to go. It’s a lot easier than cramming everything you own into a Chevy Cavalier. Shop around, because some companies may offer specials.
Also, get insurance for the rental if your current policy doesn’t cover rentals. It may be an extra few bucks but if there’s an accident, you’ll be glad you had it.

Cheapest way would to use a car, to carry the carload of stuff. That or maybe also trailer

How much stuff do you have? Make sure you really want to keep the stuff you’re moving; basement “stuff” is usually just that—stuff.

For what it’s worth, depending on how much stuff you have, I have heard that if you take Amtrak, you can bring extra large suitcases/bags on the train with you for a nominal fee…I have a friend who moved from Chicago to NYC using Amtrak, and brought a few huge duffel bags with her. Saved her the expense of a one-way rental car. Of course, this only works if you’re mostly moving things like clothes, not furniture, but’s an off-the-beaten-path solution that I thought was interesting when I heard about it. Also, this would help you to avoid driving during the traffic of Thanksgiving weekend.
