How do I get white water stains off a black sofa?

Asked by Unexpected_Rain (357points) November 2nd, 2009

I have a black sofa with wide arms, which I have randomly used to rest cups on. Everytime the fabric has gotten slightly damp a ring of white has appeared after its dried. I’m guessing it’s the water bringing something out of the fabric. Anyone have any ideas on how to get them out?

I would try soaking a sponge and then throughly sponge the area, in hopes that the original fabric dye will fill in. Try this on the back of the sofa first, where it won’t be seen.

If that doesn’t work, you could try to sponge some black dye onto the arm part.

Personally, I would make a sofa arm organizer that simply sits on the arm and cover the problem. There are also arm tables

Before starting with a dye, consider water with a bit of vinegar (the clear, industrial variety).

Try on an inconspicuous piece first.

Vanish should work , or soda crystals .
Before you try anything , try it on a sample around the back where no1 can see if it fails .

I’m having a go with a sponge, going to see what happens when it dries. Then i’ll try the vinegar.

I have some soda crystals, but wasn’t sure what to do with them. I shall investige them!

Just paint it all white so you don’t have this problem. :D

I would try vinegar… if you can’t fix it, you could get a fabric marker to touch it up.

I must admit i’m tempted to just use a black marker pen, but i’m getting some vinegar today to try that first.

Wondering how your couch is looking right now…

So… did it work out. And how? Don’t leave me hangin’.

@whitenoise Heh, sorry things are crazy as we’re in the middle of moving house.

I have discovered that water fades the marks but leaves another ring mark around it.
The vinegar works a little better, but leaves a solid mark covering the old one.
I tried solutions of soda crystals and of bicarbonate of soda but they both left dusty marks when they dried.

The best I’ve found is colouring the stains with a black permenat marker, then dabbing it to take off some of the ink, when that dries you can hardly tell where it was coloured and it doesn’t rub off.
