Does anyone else have a phobia of waterfalls?
I was just browsing questions and discovered the ‘phobias’ section.. there were aot I identify with, fears of falling into the sky etc and alot I didnt, but the one I couldn’t find was my biggest fear.. waterfalls. I struggle to even look at them on paper, when you add movement and noise to the equation I nearly lose my mind. I have searched time and time again and it’s apparently not recognised as a real phobia, which strikes me as stupid as a fear of water (which I don’t have) is very common, as is a fear of heights (again, not a problem) so surely a fear of water going over heights would be fairly common?! Anyway, help me out guys, I feel like the only one in the world with my phobia.

It doesn’t have to have been named to be recognized as a real phobia.It’s a classic phobia. Phobias are curable; if this one is causing you distress, PM me and I will give you my opinion as to what you can do to be free of it.
Not massively confident that anything can rid me of it as many things have been tried which have made it considerably worse. It’s not a huge deal as waterfalls don’t regularly occur in my house, but it does make going places kinda trying sometimes.. I just say thank god I live in England!
If you can put your finger on it, what specifically bothers you about waterfalls?
Everything.. the noise, the sight, the smell.. the raw power, the way it messes with my eyes, the idea of going over, or being under, or getting dragged towards, and probably anything else you can think of. Oh and rapids. But I don’t mind tall skinny waterfalls that much, it’s wide ones, I guess it’s more to do with volume of water.
hey, it’s still not as weird as a butterfly phobia. A waterfall can kill you, a butterfly, I don’t see how.
@Psychedelic_Zebra please don’t make fun of me. I am scared shitless of butterflies. It sucks, because I get made fun of.
@shego
You really need to see a professional.
Hey, I have been working on it. When I was about 10, I was taken to the butterfly pavillion, and well, it didn’t work out for anybody. But i figure, as long as they don’t land on me, and I don’t see them, I am fine. I have at least gotten to the point where I can say butterfly without hyperventilating. So I am fine.
@shego
No, if what you are saying is true, and you would previously hyperventilate simply from the word “butterfly” then you have very very serious issues and need to see someone soon.
@shego I’m sorry, I just can’t understand the phobia. You do need t0 get some professional help though, not just some guy who tosses you in a roomful of butterflies and screams at you, “calm down, you’ll be fine.”
LOL! I just attempt to avoid them. Did you know you have to have money to get help? Because I don’t have that much.
@shego
If your really had such a deep seeded fear of butterflies, you would not be able to function in the real world.
@jackm why not, I don’t fear butterflies, and even if I did, I don’t see them all that much. Moths, yes, but I work nights, so there are more moths out when I am out.
@Psychedelic_Zebra Heyyy… I saw that. Psht. Fine. I need help. Looks like it’s time for that butterfly garden trip.
Ok this seems to have turned into the butterfly phobia chat room hehe @shego My sister has a pretty violent phobia of moths, everything from the way they move to the dust that comes off them. I didn’t used to help by tormenting her slightly (don’t judge me too harshly, kids are mean) so I get where you are coming from. She literally loses it if one comes near her, it’s pretty hard to understand but isn’t that the point of a phobia? @Psychedelic_Zebra sure a waterfall can kill you (I point that out alot) but it’s not going to come and get me or anything.. I guess my phobia does make sense compared to phobias of say.. buttons and glitter.. but in the context of something to be genuinely scared of I really don’t think it does. Oh and these days I cant put my head underwater if there is a tap running into it. Oh and don’t get me started on some of the levels on Halo!!
hi I have the same fear. I absolutly hate looking at pictures of them, espicaially niagara falls. I have dreams that it is coming towards me. It’s like having a phobia of of spiders, I start feeling all funny and I can’t touch pictures of them without getting creeped out!
Hydrobathophobia- fear of falling water? (guessing) lol, i hate waterfalls.
Someone else has the same phobia! It’s been ages since I have been on here and I didn’t realise how much stuff I would have missed hehe
