Do you have a hobby? More specifically do you have a unique hobby? Something that not a lot of people do? If so, what is it and how did you get into it?

I play the drums. I don’t know many girls that do. I got into them when I was 13, I’ve always liked them and I wanted to try it. So on my birthday my parents bought me my first drum set. Then my sister broke my bass and I decided to get a whole new set.
I also skateboard, I know a few other girls that do too. My cousin taught me how, and he gave me a board. But I learned the tricks myself, he just told me what I needed to do to not fall down.
As you can see, I’m not the girliest girl around.
I do plastic canvas. It’s not something a lot of younger people do anymore. It’s hard to even find good supplies. I love making things that can be 3D and used for things besides decoration.
@Tink1113 my ex played the drums. very very cool.
I like to mix songs in my free time, I don’t DJ or anything I just think it’s fun.
It’s not unique, but surfing is probably my all time favorite thing to do, it’s so calming and peaceful.
I raise Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. I started out with 10 two years ago, now I have close to 400. I give them away to anyone who expresses an interest in these unique and fascinating pets.
I also have a pet house spider, a genus I’m not sure of, but I keep it in a closed container and feed it crickets as I attempt to tame it down, or at least get it to not be afraid of me.
@JONESGH I got em from a friend, but many zoos, museums, and even pet stores carry them. If all else fails, there are places on line you can get them.
I collect old dog collars and tags. Often times I will study them and paint their likeness into a painting.
They are hard to find but when I find them they hang in honor in my studio.
@Psychedelic_Zebra What do the Madagascar hissing cockroaches eat? How does one ship a live cockroach?”
@Psychedelic_Zebra How did you come up with that? I never would have in a million years ever thought of it. It sounds fun, I’m just curious of where it came from.
For those of you with Hisser questions, go here, here or here The last one is about the best, and is my favorite site for hisser info.
PM me for a personal explanation, if you feel the need. Some of the websites I listed use older and less reliable knowledge. I have been an amatuer hisser breeder for two years and I know what works and what doesn’t. I could even send you a few, as long as they are legal pets in your area. You’ll have to check your state and local laws.
@mowens A friend introduced them to me, I was immediately fascinated, wanted some as pets, my wife blanched and tried to tell me no, but she has learned that no one denies me any pet I like, and find fascinating. She still hates them, but finds them fascinating as long as she doesn’t have to touch them.
sorry to hijack your thread. =)
Jsammons and I enjoy grave rubbings and we knit. I actually enjoy cleaning as well…
I play the bass flute, and the bassoon, and oboe. The only person I have met who play these, are the people that taught me.
@Psychedelic_Zebra I really am going to take you up on that hissing cockroach offer this spring. My son would be ecstatic.
My unique hobby, which my six year old son got me into, is collecting and pinning insect specimens. He’s been obsessed with bugs since before he turned three, and earlier this year asked to start a collection. I found kits online that were geared toward kids, and very quickly became almost as obsessed as my son. We spent a lot of time together this summer collecting bugs, identifying them, learning about them, and pinning them. When he found something new, we’d both freak out a little bit. This hobby led to raising monarch caterpillars and Carolina sphinx moth caterpillars. By the end of summer, he’d caught and pinned enough insects to fill two collection boxes.
It’s been really interesting to see how my son learns from his collections. He’s happy with only one specimen of each insect, and even asked me to help him make sure certain butterfly specimens were male instead of female before adding them to the collection. His reason: females lay the eggs, so we should be careful not to kill one. It’s not so much my hobby as a partnership, but I can’t pretend to be as involved and fascinated as he is!
I also like to photograph insects, and am saving up for a good macro lens. I finally got the camera I wanted and took some great pictures this summer, but that macro lens would really be nice. :)
@Clair grave rubbings are a neat way to learn about the past, and I like to wander in old cemeteries and take photos of various stones. Very peaceful and interesting hobby.
I hand carve pipes out of pipestone (catlinite), steatite, soapstone and alabaster, in many shapes and sizes, some with designs, figures and words. Several include inlaid metal figures. I don’t sell them, but gladly pass them on to friends. See ya…..Gary/wtf
I am an FCC licensed Amateur Radio (aka Ham Radio) operator. While becoming more rare as a hobby in general, the fact that I got licensed back when I was a single 20-something female was pretty rare. It is a hobby I’d love to see more people, especially young boys & girls, get into. You can go to ARRL for more info
I draw maps of fictional places—street maps. I’ve been doing that since I was a little kid. It’s fun. I also write about fictional countries and societies as if they were real.
@whatthefluther that’s awesome, if you ever decide to sell them i’ll be all over it.
@mowens….When I get an opportunity later today, I’ll download some photos and provide a link. Until then, see ya…..Gary/wtf
Here’s a few photos….I’ll get some more up tomorrow. See ya….Gary/wtf
I make stained glass sun catchers. I’m not sure that is very unique.
@Dog much the same way you would ship any living creature. Actually, roaches would be easier, as they are large, travel well, and as long as they are provided food and water for the trip, they should do fine. I’ve never shipped any, but I’m sure finding out the rules of shipping insects isn’t too difficult. The places that sell them ship them all the time.
We’ve had ants, various caterpillars, and mantis eggs shipped to us without any problems. Sometimes it’s amazing to me what kinds of bugs you can order online. Each spring and summer we raise something new!
@Dog do I get a copy of it, maybe a print, ya know?
