Has anyone been to India in Monsoon season?

Asked by xshortiex (247points) November 2nd, 2009

I’m going to India this summer with an organisation called World Challenge with my school mates. Were going suring monsoon season and are treking through the Himalaya’s, helping out at a local school and other things. We’ll have to cross rivers and things like that. What’s it like there? Any tips?

Though I haven’t been to India in Monsoon season, I did go to South Africa and we had to trek through forests and cross rivers and stuff too. All I know is that I got wet. Very wet. The rain came so suddenly and it just poured and we had to wade across rivers when it was raining. You’ll need to wear clothes that dry quickly, maybe a bathingsuit underneath. And I would bring two pairs of hiking boots or whatever shoes you’ll be wearing because my shoes got so muddy and wet that they weren’t dry the next day so I had to wear damp shoes that smelled like river water. I have friends who went on school trips to the Himalayas and they loved it so I hope you have fun!

It’s fine up in the northern highlands, during monsoon, cooler to. India is incredible, have fun.

Well, I live in India; Maharashtra state, which is somewhat below center and to west of India. Monsoons start at around May/May end, start from south/south west and travel up north. It lasts around September. Now, monsoons have gone.

In Himalayas, it could be cold, depending on where and when you go. In India, there’s dust almost everywhere. So, due to rains, it becomes muddy, esp. in villages. Be prepared for that.
India is a tropical country. It’s sunny almost everyday. Temperatures here in Maharashtra vary from around 10/20 degree Celsius in winter to 30/40 in summer. But, it depends where you are.

You may google to find more. I did and found some: Monsoon on Wikipedia, South West monsoon, North East monsoon
