What Web hosting service would you recommend?
I used to have a Web site on Geocities, but Yahoo just discontinued them, so I need a replacement. What would you recommend? I want something cheap, free if possible, and reliable. I do not have a need for extensive functionality.

Personally I prefer GoDaddy. Their customer service is what sold me on them. I call them a lot to help me get things set up and they always are helpful.
Also they have discount codes.
I think the cheapest hosting service that has a good reputation is A Small Orange. The “tiny” plan is 25 bucks a year. Other than that, you can go with a super cheap pay-as-you-go hosting service called NearlyFreeSpeech.
GoDaddy has always treated me well also. Never heard of the other two here.
I am currently using A small Orange and I really like them. I asked them to install eRuby on the sever I use and it took them under ten minutes to comply. And that was at around 2AM their time. I have the 5 dollar per month plan. It is kinda expensive but the support is great and the server is super fast. They don’t seem to oversell like Dreamhost does.
I switched from NearlyFreeSpeech since I had a billing problem with them that I was having a problem getting resolved.
But A Small Orange has been my best hosting experience so far.
GoDaddy for sure, i have been with them for over a year now, they are much better than my last one.
they are a little more expensive that some other services, but its well worth it. their customer service is great.
I use Bluehost, something like $7 /month, unlimited everything pretty much
GoDaddy sucks hard, would highly NOT recommend them. If you rely on the cPanel to access areas of your site, which seems like you might, you will be lost forever in their horribly designed and confusing interfaces.
I should say right now that several people have told me to stay away from plans that have anything as unlimited for cheap. This is an illusion as your website would probably buckle under the strain anyway. There’s more to it, but I forget what. Basically, it’s an advertising gimmick.
@wenn I politely disagree regarding cpanel on GoDaddy. It is not that difficult to manage at all for me. I also love that they auto-install applications like wordpress, simple machines forum and zen cart so I do not have to know PHP and such.
@Dog Has simple installs for Wordpress and things, and the cPanel is bazillion light years better. But if you like GoDaddy….
@gggritso Bluehost is a reputable hosting provider, safe and secure, I know many web designers and developers that use it. here is a list of features you get with bluehost account. And I have never had an issue with my site running, and i also know one developer I know runs a blog on his bluehost that gets a hell of a lot of traffic and the site never falters.
@wenn I never said that Bluehost, or any other host mentioned is unsafe. I just said that anything “unlimited” for a small price is a marketing gimmick. I stand by that. The point is that you shouldn’t be too excited about unlimited bandwidth. You’re paying for a service that you don’t need. The more important statistic is website performance.
I have used Dreamhost for a while for some small project non-commerical sites. Outside of a major billing snafu they pulled in January the service and support has been good.
For mission-critical / commercial sites I recommend either Liquidweb or MediaTemple
