Why do i suddenly have severely cracked corners on my lips?

Asked by buckbo (20points) November 3rd, 2009

Less than a month ago, I noticed the corners of my mouth getting dry and cracked, almost like a cold sore but not resulting in one. I’ve used all kinds of crap on it and the cracking will go away but come right back. I’ve not changed anything but taken alot of Vitamin C as it’s flu season.

Don’t lick your lips, for starters. That just makes it worse.

If it doesn’t work with all the various things you’ve put on your lips, I would see a doctor about it. If you keep chapstick/vaseline/burt’s bees on it consistently and keep the area clean, it should be clearing up. If it’s not, that makes me think something else is going on.

I would drink lots of water to try a get rid of it. However much water you think you should be drinking, double it. Do this for at least a week or so, and see if it helps.

Cracked lips are often a sign of a B vitamin deficiency

Could be a sign you are drooling in your sleep, or snoring with your mouth open. How rested do you feel in the AM?

Do as the others above have suggested: Get you vitamins, stay hydrated and treat the affected area before sleep each night with pure lanolin (found in the baby section of your local pharmacy…marketed as “nipple” cream).

During the day aloe would work best to heal the area, as it soaks in quickly and won’t be seen by others.

I am slightly confused, is it your lips that are chapped or the actual skin at the sides of your lips?
If it is the sides of your lips, Facade is definitely correct, vitamin B could be lacking. It could also be a deficiency of iron in your diet causing anemia (low red blood cells). You’ve already said you didn’t change any routine except vitamin C, so I highly doubt is an allergic reaction. But just to double check, you didn’t change your chapstick/ lipgloss/ foundation/ lotion right?

I would suggest trying straight petroleum jelly on the sides, and nothing else. If it continues, you probably should check into seeing a dermatologist or a doctor.

Petroleum jelly is not a good idea. It doesn’t allow the skin to receive oxygen. Go to a local store which has a “natural” section and get a lip balm there. Burt’s Bees and Dr. Bronners are popular brands which sell good products

@buckbo – I know exactly what you’re talking about, as this happens to me. Usually it starts when the weather begins to cool down and the air becomes dryer. Since it started, I became aware that I unconsciously lick the corners of my lips. So, it takes a few days to heal, but I make an effort to not lick the corners, as well as applying some sort of moisture barrier to the cracked parts. Right now I use a beeswax-based lip product called Lipsyl.

Try lots of water as @jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities said, as well as pure vitamin E oil or Carmex for more immediate relief.

Dehydration is one of the biggest causes of dry and cracked lips. I know others have said this on here but I just want to emphasize it. You need more water! Also keep in mind that many chapsticks just make the matter worse. I would second trying Burt’s Bees or a natural chapstick instead of some of the more common ones. Make sure it isn’t water or alcohol based as that is what makes the situation worse.

I used to watch the show ‘You Are What You Eat’. She always examined people, and noted the cracked corners of their mouths, cause by a B12 deficiency. Eat leafy greens if you don’t have enough in your diet.

Yep. Vitamin B deficiency. I used to get it all the time as a kid. I took vitamin B shots for awhile. See your doc.

This makes sense, I used to take B12 and got a shot at one time too, cuz I’m so tired! It’s not my lips that are chapped, it’s only the corners that are cracked, too sore to open my mouth and eating anything that is crunchy or salty is torture. I’ve read that Burt’s Bees peppermint oil and other stuff has been hard on people’s lips. This just started less than a month ago and I probably definately need to eat more greens! Vaseline is the only thing that feels good, but I’ll try something else. p.s. Buttcream works really well! (It’s for baby’s bottoms when they have diaper rash). I don’t know if that’s a good thing to use or not, but it feels good.

Maybe you mouth breathe. When you’re asleep? If the air’s a little too cold and you breath through your mouth, your lips will dry out.
