Street smarts.
Nothing is by the book anymore.

I live on a college campus. It is my world. Thus: book smarts.
If I lack book smarts then my peers don’t respect me and it would seem I have no reason for being here. Thus: book smarts. For now.

People with street smarts and book smarts have all the bases covered.
There’s no reason you can’t be both.

I agree there is no reason you can’t be both.

But to answer the question I would choose street smarts. It is probably the culture and socio-economic class that leads me to believe this is more important. But I feel that common sense in regards to life is essential. And book smarts is an added perk.

When you say street smarts, you are talking about a dying breed; it seems to me that most people on the streets are not very smart at all. With regards to book smarts, I think it would help the planet better if we all stopped pretending things like global warming, and pollution are not real.

But to answer your question, I like book smarts + a little street smarts thrown in for good measure.

While book smarts have always been most important, I am finding that the necessity of street smarts is increasing. Knowledge from a great many sources better informs my work and interactions, but street smarts let me connect to people of all walks of life, and navigate my way through many systems.

Seeing as I’m a grad student, book smarts are rather important. Depends what you mean by ‘street’ smarts, though, since being able to work intuitively, and not just from rote memory, is very important.

used to be street smarts. now it’s book smarts.

The question was which is more important in your world…. #_# Of course we can and ideally should have both. But generally one outweighs the other. Situationally.

In the Stanford world, book smarts is probably more important, but I would never decide to give up the other one. To me, they’re both important and I don’t think someone who feels like they have adequate practical knowledge should decide not to gain any “book smarts”. People with practical knowledge are the ones who can better apply “book smarts”.

I think it is like the chain is as strong as its weakest link. Both are pretty much equally necessary unless you live exclusively in a lab or the asphalt jungle. By book smarts though I mean a way to make a living or a career, not just your nose in a book at all times.

Street smarts occasionally may contain book smarts that are so common that they don’t have to be read to be learned about.

hence common sense. i think there’s too little of that.

The two can overlap, I think. I’m exclusively book-smart, and thus far I’ve survived the big city.

Hmm. That’s a tough one for me to answer. In my own head, book smarts are more important for me. In the actual world I live in, street smarts are just as, if not more, important. If I could only have one though, I’d have to pick book smarts.

I work at a University and live in a town where I don’t need a huge amount of street smarts (other than the ones that come with common sense) so in my current life, book smarts benefit me more. However, I have street smarts from previous places I have lived and worked and so I remember it all for future reference. I think it is important to have a certain amount of both.

Moving out of “Charm City” means I “need” my street smarts less. Especially since everyone here is so nice. It’s weird. Lowering my defenses, methinks. Book smarts are on the rise though.

Like a good friend always says in reply to “you cant teach an old dog new tricks”, “what if one of the tricks he already learned was how to learn new tricks?”

They are NOT mutually exclusive. I have met very few people that count as one or the other that cannot competently compete in the opposite. Being smart doesnt refer to what you already know, it refers to your ability to learn. If your smart to begin with, it doesnt matter what the topic is, or how its approached.
