What are your thoughts about wireless electricity?

Asked by lled (45points) November 3rd, 2009

I have been hearing more and, more, about electricity being delivered, from the source to a device, without the use of wires. What are your thoughts concerning wireless electricity?
Do you think they can actually pull it off to where it is something we will see used in the home everyday, and if so, how long do think it will b before it happens?

It’s a reality, but I think it will take time before it is commercialized.

I’d be damn ecstatic about not having to worry about power cables anymore! Actually wireless electricity is not so far fetched. I already have a wireless charger for my toothbrush (it uses an inductive coil).

Too lossy. If it ever is radically improved (after what, 100+ years?) I wouldn’t want the side effects.

It could be very dangerous to ones health, could give you gray hair.

It’s been a working idea ever since Nikola Telsa came up with it a hundred years ago.

But it’ll probably give the early adopters cancer.

@Beta_Orionis Wireless electricity is much more efficient than chemical batteries.

@aphilotus Wireless electricity doesn’t use radiation for transmission it uses induction (just like my toothbrush) it just uses resonant coupling in order to transfer energy using a magnetic field across a larger distance than most inductive energy transfer devices (aka transformers).

Uh, news flash. That’s how my toothbrush charges. ;)

I know, I know. Not quite the same. ;)

Gosh! The very thought makes my hair stand on end!

oratio's avatar

@asmonet Yes, but this technology is wireless as in “across the room”.

So it’s a little farther than between chunks of plastic. I can charge my toothbrush from a half inch away from the base although, maybe mine is defective or something :P. I still don’t see it as too big of a jump. I do however see a bunch of problems with reliability.

Then again all I know about the subject is what little I absorbed when my nerdiest guy friend went on an hour long rant about ‘totally wicked cool science and shit!’

@Shuttle128 but not near enough to wired electricity. I wouldn’t want to be constantly immersed in a strong magnetic field.

Shuttle128's avatar

@Beta_Orionis Do you drive a car or own a stereo? The speakers in stereos have much stronger magnetic fields than a wireless electricity transmitter. There is no evidence to suggest that magnetic fields have any detrimental effects on humans.

Beta_Orionis's avatar

I do not. While there may not be evidence, I would like to avoid it.

check out http://www.ustream.tv/antigravity_explained he speaks about wireless electricity and free energy too.

SpatzieLover's avatar

I can’t WAIT! I hate cords!

ILLUMINUTTY's avatar

Seriously, we are bombarded by the earths magnetic waves constantly it’s called gravity.
There is even ongoing research into using radio waves to cure cancer.
Nikola Tesla had it down and the Govt. stole his ideas. He even demostrated it by lighting up street lights without wires in the road near his laboratory on long island.
The only thing that stopped him was Westinghouse sold the idea of DC. current first to J.Paul Getty. Before Nikola could show the Miilionare his free energy designs the tower laboratory strangely burned down.
Tesla’s legacy lives on in many things we use today, the Microwave , radar, xrays, even television were first envisioned by this humble and incredibly smart man.
Be Well.

Wireless Power is allready available, www.wpc.no/products.html. Due to the uncertainty about health risks when generating a field across large distances, Wireless Power & Communication have focused on transmission across short distances. This technology enables transmission of several hundreds og watts with efficiency of up to 95%

It is what I wish for!

mattbrowne's avatar

We already got wireless electricity over here. European thunderstorms occur regularly causing impressive bolts of lightning. No cords or wires, I swear.

Shuttle128's avatar

@ILLUMINUTTY Dude….no….gravity has nothing to do with magnetism.

mattbrowne's avatar

@Shuttle128 – Except before the 10^-43th second.

Shuttle128's avatar

@mattbrowne Shhh…..I meant now….it is no longer linked to magnetism as far as we know now, I think the criticism still stands though

@Shuttle128 – Fair enough ;-)
