I need to get an external hard drive for my new iMac. I use this computer for work and need to back up my data. I want something not very expensive but something that will work well and be reliable. Any suggestions? Also, I will be using time machine to back up my computer.

If you have an old laptop HD you can buy a cheap kit that turns it into a USB HD that would suit your purposes.
I’ve got a Buffalo 1TB external HD and never had any issues with it. It was only £65 I think.
I swear by LaCie, and I’m also starting to buy some OWC. FireWire 800 will give you greater transfer speeds for large files. USB 2.0 is fine for smaller files.
If you’re going to use the same disk for both Time Machine and regular data storage, be sure to partition the drive into two volumes. Otherwise, Time Machine will eventually eat up the entire drive.
Definitely Seagate. Hands down. I have one that’s 750GB, and another that’s 1.5GB, and they’re amazing. Upon that, they offer a huge selection of connections. You could either get one that has USB 2.0, one that has Firewire, or one that has eSATA. If you’re willing to dish out more money, you could even get one that has all the connections that I just stated. And you cant go wrong with eSATA. C’mon. With a 3Gbit/s transfer rate? It makes USB 2.0 look like a geezer on rollerblades
