Why is it popular within the young male black community to wear Nascar jackets now?

Asked by Patrick_Bateman (747points) November 5th, 2009

I know for a fact this is not Nascar’s core demographic. What is the appeal?

I’m from ME but live in Little Rock, AR now and see this all the time. Is it regional?

FYI – I despise Nascar

Didn’t know that. Nascar does want to attract minorities supposedly. Or, at least this one guy we know, who is a team owner, was looking for sponsors from specifically Hispanic companies a few years ago. I wonder if Nascar is actively marketing towards the black community, or if a black celebrity is wearing the jacket and it caught on? Or, maybe it is local to you area? I’m outside of Memphis, I’ll have to keep an eye out.

You know how there’s a good number of people who like to wear ripped, baggy jeans with 10,000 pockets and jackets with flashy designs and logos on them? The pit crew styled jackets have a crapload of random stuff on it and matches that appeal in some way. The only thing I can’t make out is why they buy these instead of the normal rapper/gang/gang rapper clothing, because NASCAR jackets can get really pricey really quickly.

Why would anyone want to wear a Nascar jacket? I agree the two do not seem to go together. Thankfully I don’t run into too much Nascar couture in San Diego. :D.

According to this 2001 post, it’s a gang thing, about the numbers.

I live in Little Rock, too!! Hi :)

if you’re from ME & now live in AR, how come you don’t mention either as places you’ve lived on your profile? :-)

Nascar has focused a lot of resources toward increasing popularity among the young black demo in the last 2–3 years. There aren’t black drivers yet but a few black team owners.

I despise nascar too

If you hate Nascar, I’m wondering why specifically? Are you into other car racing, just not Nascar?

A. It is somewhat gang related, sometimes but NOT ALWAYS. Do understand that it’s more a trend and less so a gang symbol. Please.

B. It isn’t popular within the “young black community”, it’s popular in the urban ghetto. It isn’t a race/ethnicity thing, it’s a socioeconomic, environment one.

C. Again, it is just another style choice and fad. Why do hipsters wear plaid flannel when they most certainly are not lumberjacks? Why do some people wear camouflage when they aren’t in the Military? Catch my drift?

@Grisaille I love that you had to shout NOT ALWAYS. I feel like that on fluther all of the time.

Man 2: A 2008 BMW
Man 1: You must be doing well—that’s a NASCAR

@ccrow wiki patrick bateman and you’ll see why.

@JLeslie i don’t think it’s a sport, it’s boring, it’s kitsch, and it’s for the philistines.

@pinkparaluies hey, little rocker!

@Grisaille A) I actually finally asked a guy who works in the restaurant i do who wears a nascar jacket and he did say it had to do with illegal activity. he wears a skittles nascar jacket and he sells ecstasy. he was very blunt about it. he works in the kitchen a couple shifts a week to have a W-2. Apparently the different logos and insignias do pertain to different gangs or other illegal trades according to him. he says some people have made it into a trend but its main purpose is still nefarious.

B) I said “young black male” because that’s the only people i see wearing them. i think if i’d said ghetto at first you would have jumped on that too.

C) i see your point but unfortunately those trends origins aren’t linked to illegal activity.

@Grisaille @Patrick_Bateman About “B” In Little Rock young black male is probably practically synonomous with urban ghetto lower socioeconomic, one of the unfortunate realities of the south.

pinkparaluies's avatar

@JLeslie Yeaaah, except Little Rock isn’t necessarily “the ghetto”.

JLeslie's avatar

@pinkparaluies I would assume there are pockets of Little Rock that are ghetto? I am not an expert, when I went to Little Rock I went to the Clinton Library, which was fantastic, and had a very nice salad at one of the nearby restaurants. But, my experience has been every decent size city has a lower income area. Is your city different?
