Why is it called tapping the collective?

Asked by troubleinharlem (7999points) November 5th, 2009

I could see “asking the people” or something like that, but why tapping the collective?

Like tapping into something. Makes perfect sense.

Well, think of all of us jellies as a vast reservoir of collected wisdom, knowledge, and experience. That’s the collective. It’s like a keg of beer, waiting for people to come along and slake their thirst for knowledge. So what do you do when you want to draw from a keg of beer? You tap it. Voila.

@JLeslie ; Oh, I’ve never heard that phrase before. D:
@Harp ; Well… I guess I can use that example. I mean, I don’t drink (underage), but I suppose I can imagine it.

because the creator wanted me to say “giggity” every time i did it.

I don’t know how the phrase developed. If I had to guess I would think a tap is when you listen in, like when your phone is tapped. So, if you think of the collective as a bunch of people having comments and conversation, and then if you listen in you hear all that is being said. It’s like something already exists and when you tap in you get to be a part of it. I am not explaining well.

I googled and got this recent article about the elections in NY, they us the expression in the title http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/2009/10/15/2009-10-15_no_cakewalk_for_mayor_mike.html now you will probably notice more when it is used.

Or like a maple tree, filled with the sap of knowledge, from which we make the syrup of wisdom?

“Tap” is also used in the sense of diverting a bit of the flow of something for our own ends. Like “tap water” comes from a “tap” – we’re “tapping” a bit of the water flowing through the city’s pipes. We put a tap in a tree to get sap. A tap in a phone line is the same idea, only it’s words and information instead of sap or water.

Etymology of ‘Tap.’

Oh, and the collective just means the group, a collection of people in this case.

Yes, but does it have electrolytes?

Sarcasm's avatar

Yeah. It’s what plants crave.

@Sarcasm scoff if you must.. but have you seen the photobucket group? a few friends at work saw some of the girls of fluther and immediately said “I’d tap that”. Just FYI.

Well, the original tagline, “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, just never took off.

People thought this was an airshow/male stripper website.

@eponymoushipster Speaking of, i always wanted to get really sexy (i have a very tough time getting and keeping a 6 pack) and do a strip to to “man in the box” by alice in chains

Because screwing the collective has too much of a negative overtone. Well, unless you are @eponymoushipster, but the rules are different for sexy monkeys.
