What attitude do you have towards perennial winners?
I find it very annoying that the Yankees, for example, have won 27 World Series titles in baseball. That’s 17 more than the next most winning team, the St. Louis Cardinals.
I guess, at least in America, we grow up with some kind of idea that fairness should be a right. Everyone should start from a level playing field. And yet, there are many situations where we do not start from a level playing ground, and the perennial winners—the ones going down hill…
How do you feel about them? Do you dislike them because they have a head start? Do you hate them because they always win, and no one else has a chance? Do their victories somehow seem tainted by money? Or is it fair, as far as you’re concerned? That’s the nature of humanity. Some people just have advantages.
Is there a perennial winner you love to hate? Is there some team or organization whose victories just seem to stick in your craw? Who or what are they? Do you feel they are cheating, somehow, because they win so much? Is it sour grapes? Or is it fine by you?

Well, I’m from New York, so I actually do like them by default. But, to be honest with you, I watched game 6 as they won and while they were celebrating it didn’t seem as exciting as I thought it was going to be.
There should be a cap on how much these teams can spend… unless there already is? Tell me if I’m wrong. If there is, maybe it should be lowered even more.
No, I don’t believe caps are the answer. Hell, I’m not even questioning how much they spend, and what they can achieve because of how much they spend.
What I want to know is whether these victories are fulfilling, or if it somehow seems like it’s no fun for either the Yankee fans or every other team’s fans because the Yankees win two to three times per decade, and most others win two to three times per century? Yankees are World Champions? Ho hum. Tell me something I don’t know.
@daloon I agree, it’s not very fulfilling. So what can we do about it? Probably nothing.
I abhor constant winners. Me? I love losers a great deal. And I love those who try hard and win every now and again. F the Yankee’s and their mom.
If they win so much, it means they’re good. Too bad. Good for them.
I love rooting for the underdog, it makes it more exciting… especially when they win!
I love the Yankees, and I love the Cubbies. I guess I’m just ecumenical that way.
I just love seeing a good game being played. I usually don’t care as much who wins. I like when it’s close or unusual in some way.
I was at the Yankees side during their sucky 1970’s stretch.
I am glad they are doing so good. Just the way it goes.
Ya win some you looses some.
As much as I hate the Yankees, I have to admit that my Sox are guilty of the same money issue. I would love to see a salary cap and more focus on building up the farm teams rather than just going out and seeking power pitchers and home-run hitters. Poorer teams just can’t compete when they are pinned up against line-ups that are swimming with steroid filled super-humans.
Will it happen? Probably not…unless we get rid of that spineless Bud Selig.
I hate Tom Brady and the Patriots. hate em hate em hate em!
I love the Yankees, I have been a Yankee fan for probably 60 years, through their ups and downs.
It has never occurred to me to hate a team or a company or the individuals who make up the whole, so no I don’t.
But I must confess I have felt jealousy, envy or something akin towards individuals who always seem to come up smelling like roses. And then have the gall to brag or constantly remind me of it. I don’t necessarily want to deny them what they have, I just wish I had more of it myself.
Wow, that makes me sound shallow but that’s the way it is!
Most important though and I remind myself of this often is that I am healthy and able to take care of myself. I know there are lots of people who would trade many materials possessions to be able to say that.
@jonsblond Even Tom Brady hates Tom Brady…. but then there are rivalries. I hate the Donkos when they play the Chargers… but only when they play the Chargers…. (I always hate the Raiders but that’s another story). I do think sometimes sprots in the US can be a little lopsided… but in the case of the yankees, while they have won many more WS than anyone else.. when was the last time they won? they did not dominate the decade as they once did…
Still i can see how the continued succes of one can be frustrating to a certain group.. especially if it seems to come easily. But there may be another side we don’t see. The people that make it look easy have some God given talent.. but they work hard to cultivate it. They put in effort and hone their craft. They are the best because they work at being the best… these things are not just handed to them.
In Med school i took a lot of shit from my classmates during testing periods. I have a knack for testing well and finishing very fast… so if we were given around 3 hours for an exam and i finished in 45 minutes (a regular occurence).. people would start to get nervous or tense because they thought either time was running out or the test was easy and they just didn’t study hard enough. The fact that i did better than most pissed them off even more. I took a lot of heat over it and tried like crazy to sit still after finishing exams in order to take longer and avoid this (i finally just stopped caring). But the fact remains that i studied like there was no tomorrow… i came prepared, i read fast and test well. It’s not my fault that others don’t and if people wanted to be pissed about it that was their business. No skin off my nose.
end rant
I think the Yankees everlasting domination hits me the hardest. I hear those fans complaining they haven’t won a championship in 10 years. Wow! Big whoop. There are plenty of teams who are in a larger drought than that and don’t have 27 notches in their belt. Heck, the Rangers, Astros, Brewers, Padres, Mariners, Rockies, and the Rays have never even won a world series. So yes, to answer you’re question, I love to hate the Yankees.
Although to be honest, I respect them for their past history. Some of the greatest players of all time have played for the Yankees.
I don’t even follow professional sports, so I don’t even care. Of course, the Iowa Hawkeyes have an unbeaten record. If you are going to follow football, you should follow college ball.
Very much fun seeing who might be second when playing with Tiger Woods. That’s actually how we bet.
@oratio My Denver Broncos have lost many important games to the Patriots. :(
