I use CetaPhil Daily Facial Moisturizer (with 15 SPF) straightaway after I get out of the shower. It’s a mild formula that doesn’t cause me zit problems.

Aqueous cream can be bought at any Boots or other good chemist. Great stuff and strangely very cheap.

If you are willing to spend a little more Chanel and Clarins have very good treatment products (I prefer Chanel). Are you sure it is dry skin and not rosacea? Also, don’t use products that are very drying to clean your skin like regular bar soap or alcohol. Lancome makes a cream cleanser, it comes in a tube, that is very good; only use a pea size amoung because it lathers up a lot.

Retinol is amazing. It’s loaded with vitamin A.

Also stay away from AHA’s that might irritate your skin. @Capt_Bloth I think of retinol for oily skin, it takes off surface layer to give the appearance of younger skin, much like AHA, did you have dry skin?

Vaseline (the brand) has a nice product called aloe fresh – with aloe and cucumber – it’s cheap, smells nice and I trust the brand. Works loverly.

“KIss MY Face” has an excellent line for skin on various parts of the body. There are no nasty chemicals in the ingredients.

My face has been extremely dry for tha last 5 years, whether from menopause or just the elements. It felt like sandpaper and I even had hair dressers comment on it. I tried every lotion I could get, from cheap to expensive. Finally I went to a skin specialist (not a dermatoligist) and got a face peel and he put me on retinol. His reasoning was to get rid of the old, dead layers first before the skin can be soft and fresh again. My skin is amazingly soft now. I had to go through a few weeks of peeling, but it was worth it.

@chyna: Did your insurance cover it? Do you have to be careful in the sun? How much?

chyna's avatar

@gailcalled My insurance did not cover it. It was 350.00 with several sessions of dermabrasion to slough off the dead skin as I peeled. It also included the retinol. I had the face peel in August and I’m still peeling a little, so I have gone for a dermabrasion about once a week for all this time. It only takes about 15 minutes for the dermabrasion, so it’s really no big deal and my face feels so much better. My doctor says he doesn’t believe in staying out of the sun, he likes to be out in it himself, but to be smart about it by using a sunscreen and wearing a hat when you can. As a side note, this wasn’t about vanity for me, it was about my face being so dry that it actually hurt. It felt like your skin feels when you get a moderate sunburn, but it never quit hurting.

@JLeslie I used it for my hands for a while. They were very, very, dry. It was so bad that I had a stinging pain all over my skin constantly. Retinol was the only thing I found that could help.

When I had extremely dry skin, it was from the menagerie of acne treatments that my dermatologist and/or regular doctor put me on.

So…are you on any acne regimens? Or is this a result of weather?

I don’t know if Aveeno (brand) is available in the UK, but I prefer Aveeno to other brands because it doesn’t make my face burn. My mom likes Oil of Olay, which has an excellent record. Kiehl’s has good reviews, but I haven’t tried it.

I hope you can clear this up!

Sorry for pointing out the obvious, but are you drinking enough water?
You may just be dehydrated.

I’ve tried so many expensive brands, and I always come back to a “cheapie”- Olay Regenerist Daily Serum. It’s about $20 and available everywhere.
