Great playlist with Belle & Sebastian theme
I am trying to make a playlist for a girl for valentines day… she likes Belle & Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens, Sunset Rubdown… indie bands like that. so far the only sure song i have is “Anyone Else But You” by the Moldy Peaches.
Does anyone have some recommendations for those type indie songs with valentines/love`esque themes?
thanks so much!

here’s a quick mix for you… hope you and your sweetheart like it!
heartbeats – jose gonzalez
stay forever – ween
maps – yeah yeah yeahs
eyes on the prize – m. ward
my funny valentine – norfolk & western
this heart’s on fire – wolf parade
young folks – peter bjorn and john
well i wonder – the smiths
there’s too much love – belle and sebastian
Since you already have the Moldy Peaches and Belle and Sebastian, you might as well take a look at the rest of the Juno sountrack.
nouvelle vague are kind of in that vein and do alll those 80s covers, but second Jose Gonzalez (he’s amazing live).
Also maybe a different style but still romantic: Zero 7, Sia, Seu Jorge, Pink Martini, Cesaria Evora may also expand her horizons a bit :)
Also Iron and Wine, Brightblack Morning Light, Madeleine Peyroux.
never forget cat power, or joanna newsom. i bet some van morrison would definitely be great. especially Tupelo Honey or Ain’t No Sunshine (by morrison)
Here are my favorite indie love songs:
My favorite love song of all time is “The Littlest Birds” by the Be-Good Tanyas. It is really really pretty.
“Amen” by Jolie Holland
“Pink Moon” by Nick Drake
“Playmate” by Edith Frost
Any of the various covers of “Buckets of Rain” (originally by Bob Dylan, but I like Neko Case’s live version best)
“The way I am” by Ingrid Michaelson is a really cute song, I’m not as crazy about the rest of her album but I like that one a lot.
If you want something a little more sexy, you could put “All Night” by Sam Phillips on there.
I would also recommend anything from the new Iron & Wine (the Shepherd’s Dog); the new Fiest album (the Remainder) is great too.
second what christy said, but it’s The Reminder as opposed to ”The Remainder” which would probably be about math or the holocaust or something.
The song “Parentheses” by The Blow from their album Paper Television definitely fits what you are looking for. Super cute, super indie.
Also, absolutely put “You’re So Pretty” by Field Music on it. It’s an absolutely amazing and romantic song. The kind of thing you can really get lost in. It’s from their self-titled album.
“Turn On Me” by The Shins from their album Wincing the Night Away is also perfect.
Jesus, I think I might make my girlfriend a mix with all of this on it, too.
All of this is available on itunes, and i’m sure limewire or whatever silly illegal things you kids are using these days has it too.
wow, you guys have been great! there is some stuff here i would never have thought of. thanks so much! and any more specific songs would be really awesome! (as in more of the, not more specific)
i think folk-indie / lo-fi stuff sounds the most romantic for this mix… and again, you guys are really great!
@ezralgenn – some people find math very romantic. I mean, why do you think guys are always asking “hey baby what’s your sine?”
i wish i were a derivative so i could lie tangent to all your curves.
Anything by Kings of Convenience would fit the bill (folk indie)...
get her some m. ward. she will melt at his music.
alright guys, this is what i have compiled thus far…
clique here
let me know what you think! or not. anything vital missing?
Great mix! I love that Psapp song and the Magnetic Fields and Bright Eyes were nice choices too. I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite track from 69 Love Songs but personally I like “Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side” “Asleep and Dreaming” and “The Sun Goes down and the World Goes Dancing” better than the one you picked, but eh. She will still swoon.
wait that’s such a good playlist! Also, what a direct compliment to so many of us for taking our suggestions. New favorite flutherer!
you have seriously constructed the best playlist
bravo
Two perrenials though not nec. Indie folk:
Mazzy Star-Fade Into You
Neil Young-Razor Love
To everyone here, you are all amazing! Your help has been invaluable! But I guess that’s what fluther is all about right? Overall I am pleased with the playlist, and I KNOW that I couldn’t have done it without you all and your incredible suggestions. I think the hardest part was making it short enough to burn onto a single CD.
Also, I noticed that it kind of leaned towards some electronica at times, but hey, I think it works.
At christybird, I agree with you about the last song, but I feel that it wrapped it all up nicely, no?
And again, to everyone who helped me. Thank you so much! And if any of you want to use the playlist, go for it. You guys practically made it.
