Will a Sheetz gas card help my credit?

Asked by cricketonastick (198points) November 7th, 2009

Sheetz is a convenience store. Not sure if they are national. I want to build credit and I heard that if you can’t get a credit card (I’m only 18) then a gas card is a good way to go.

Is this what I’m looking for?

I think if you use it judiciously and pay it off completely every month, then it becomes a good credit reference when apply for a major credit card.

Poor payment records follow you everywhere though so try to pay it off completely every month. I do that with my visa and they are constantly sending me letters wanting to up my credit limit.

Try department stores. My first credit card was at The Bon Marché

I walked in with zero credit and 10 minutes later I had a card with a 200$ limit and a boom box. It was the 90’s.

God, I’m old! i was eighteen and a college student when mastercard started up. they gave me a card which i have been making payments on since. but yes, it has helped me all my life. never ever miss your payments unless you phone whoever the card is from first. they can be very understanding because they do want your payments in the end. most big department stores want you to have their card.

@faye- You think you’re old? When I first got my MasterCard it was still known as Master Charge. That wasn’t long after BankAmericard became Visa.

No. If you want to build credit then go to your bank and ask to open a secured line of credit. You’ll pay up front a few hundred dollars and be given a credit card to match that amount, kind of like this example:

You give your bank $500.
Bank gives you a Visa card with a $500. balance
As you pay down your balance and keep charging back up, paying on time then you build a credit history.
After about 6mos or a year ask your bank to raise your credit limit without you paying more on your end or to grant you an unsecured line of credit.
Department store cards will build credit but don’t carry the weight of a Visa/MC, etc.

@hungryhungryhortence Actually, I’ve already done this! I believe that my secured credit card is in the mail, but I would like to build credit as quickly as possible so I was looking into other ways as well. Thanks!

If you have a secured card and a store card then you are on your way to building your credit. Just make sure that you pay on time and never miss any payment. Many credit card users can easily incur so much debts that they are not able to pay. They end up seeking credit card debt help relief to get out of debt.
