Is there a decent cheap pen that won't leak when upside down?

Asked by acidlogik (475points) November 8th, 2009

Like a biro or something.

I have ruined a few good pairs of jeans by leaving a pen upside down in my pocket and having it spill its load all over my leg.

Ink stains are not partiularly attractive.

I was wondering which pens are good for this kind of absent-mindedness? I couldn’t find much on the internet other than non-leaking fountain pens. Quite OTT for what I use my pens for. That is, I mostly need them to tick stuff at work.

So yes, what pens are less likely to leak in my pocket? Gel, rollerball, ball point? or get as specific as you like ;)

get a pen with a cap?

I like the rollerball Pilot Precise V5s and V7s.

They have caps, but I’ve never had one leak on me, and they are just easy and reliable and awesome.

@MrGeneVan Very good. Yet, believe it or not, they still leak. :P

@aphilotus Thanks, I’ll give ‘em a try.

I’ve used a Pilot G2 (gel) for years because that’s what’s in the supply cabinet at work. I’ve only left it in my pocket a few times, but no mishaps thus far. Not sure about price, but I know they’re cheap—otherwise my boss would never buy them!

anything by sharpie, their rollerball pens are awesome and they come in alot of cool colors! :)

lighter fluid will get ink stains off your jeans. i drew an awesome scene on my jeans one day in a boring class. My mother didn’t understand…it’ll get gum off anything, too. how about click pens?

Bic ball point pens! Soooo cheap.
Excellent for doodling too, as you can get nearly the full gray scale.
They do not leak.

For a truer, luscious black, I second Pilot as a gel brand, but I prefer the G2 .5 variety. sleek case, consistent smooth application, crisp lines. These are a little higher up in the price range in office stores, so head to an Art supply store (I’m serious!) where you can purchase them individually for ~$1.50 in addition to .50—$1 refills, which are sometimes hard to come by in an office supply store.

My absolute favorite pen, however, comes from Muji. Minimalistic, refillable, excellent quality. The initial pen is on par with the G2’s in terms of price, but it is, hands down, the least distracting, thinnest crisp line I’ve come across in my pen searches. It’s a delight to write with.

Awesome thanks guys. I’m going to collect a small arsenal of non-leaking pens.

@fave That really works? I’ll be sure to give it a go. Any special technique I need to use, or do I just dab the stains with it?

Put it on, let it dry, put it on etc, etc. You will see the ink fading. Wash as usual. Do not sniff it while it’s drying!!

OOH, and the ink will leach thru so put cardboard or newspaper, or even a kitchen plate under

Fisher Space Pen, FTW!

It’s stylish and functional.

I use Uni-ball Vision liquid gel pens & I love them. I buy them by the box from Office Max in purple. I HATE ball points. Refuse to use them.

acidlogik's avatar

@faye I’m not sure how I managed to type your name as fave, sorry about that xD
Thanks for the info. Can’t wait to try it!

@Mamradpivo Certainly fits the bill for non-leaky. However, it’s a bit extreme for the little use it’ll be seeing from me.

@jbfletcherfan Thanks, added to the list :D

I am pen freak and spent years trying to find the perfect thing, blowing through every brand out there. This one comes close:

The Uniball Vision Elite in the microfine point.

The ink flows smoothly and evenly with no drag. It doesn’t glop or run unless you rub up against it immediately. It’s designed so that it doesn’t explode during air travel and it’s allegedly fadeproof.

I cannot recommend this pen enough!

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@figbash I like those, too. In fact, I have one in bold red right here at my side.

acidlogik's avatar

@figbash Looks great! Although £10 for a pen that will probably get lost or “borrowed” within a few weeks seems a little extravagant. Same goes for @jbfletcherfan‘s original suggestion too. Although you are pushing it quite hard, I might buy one anyway.
