Is it okay to eat fruit with a bit of mold?

Asked by pinkparaluies (1888points) November 9th, 2009

I bought some strawberries yesterday and tonight I went to go cut some and put them in a fruit salad.. when I found one strawberry with a bit of fuzzy mold on it.
I threw that one away, and was curious.. just because one had a tiny bit of mold on it.. is it okay to wash the rest off and eat them? Or should I be weary and throw them out?

Toss them. All the other ones have mold on them. It just isn’t visible yet.

And take them back to where you bought them to get your money back.

Awesome. I should have asked this earlier. I just made a jackass out of myself. LOL
I cut up the strawberries (without visible mold) and put them in a bowl with some grapes and sliced green apple.

After some internet research, I should probably just throw the entirety out.

Mold helps things rot. ROT!

Why would you want to eat ANYTHING with mold on it? Throw it out!

I just think this is so cool.

No. There’s more mold molecules in the fruit that you can’t see!

Just because one is moldy does not mean there’s anything wrong with the rest. If you don’t see any, they’re fine to eat. Besides, mold tastes bad-doesn’t kill you.

I have done this before w/no ill effects. Of course I washed all the others really well.

I believe some mold can be healthy for you, or at least help strengthen your immune system.

You can cut mold off of cheese and it’s ok, but I read somewhere that mold on fruit goes deeper than you can see, and you should throw it out!

Yeah,1 piece, 1 berry, and you can tell if the consistency of the fruit is different in bigger fruits.
