How can I overcome this extreme anxiety from my upcoming travels?

In 3 weeks, I’m flying across the country (to a hell hole that I desperately fled from years ago) to dig up old nightmares about an abusive stepfather in court. As if this isn’t bad enough, I’m also completely broke and might not have a flight buddy (I’m terrified of air travel), my final exams are that week and I haven’t even been able to talk to my instructors about it because an exact date isn’t lined up yet. Nobody seems to care that I’m in danger of completely screwing up my grades. Nobody wants to lend a hand to take me to the airport. And believe me, I’m not doing all this for pleasure. The cherry on top—I’m trying to quit smoking.
How do you deal with uncooperative relatives, an empty, bank account, flying, potential failing grades and a hand that constantly reaches for the cigarettes? If you have any experience in any of this, it would be greatly appreciated. Even words of encouragement. I’m so nervous that everything’s just going to hell in a handbasket.

If you are flying to or from the Bay Area, I will give you a ride.
Practical Advice. Tell your professors immediately even without a firm date. They will appreciate the heads up. Also if they don’t work with you then contact the Student Association where they have the legal dept for people who cheat etc.. It seems like this is something your profs would have to accommodate. I’ve always had success with this type of thing.
Question. Are you being forced by court or something else to attend? Or are you doing it out of moral obligation? I only ask because if someone is forcing you to attend they may have to pay expenses such as taxi to airport etc.. Also Department of Human Services has a reimbursement program for mileage and very small amount for meals if you income qualify and often students do. You may check into that.
Support. Hugs and more hugs. That sounds so awful. Take care of yourself. Is there any way for you to find something to look forward to? Getting yourself a cheap massage when you get there for example?
Aw, c’mon that’s not so bad. You could even add solve world hunger and become a Nobel Peace Prize winner in there.
Holy cow that’s a lot to deal with. I would make a list of what, exactly, needs to be done for each thing and when. Grab a calander and color-code it if it helps. For me, having a plan takes most of the stress away.
I’d also add keep a journal so you can get some of those feelings/thoughts out there and away from circling around in your head.
Miles Davis, Bejeweled, and plenty of sleep. Go to bed listening to “Kind of Blue”, wake up refreshed, and go talk to your advisor tomorrow or on Thursday. They will help you out.
Pray. And if you don’t pray, I will pray for you. Everytime I’m stressed out I just keep thinking everything will work out in the end.
I really don’t have any concrete advise to give beyond this, that’s a lot to handle. Good luck on your finals though, the rest of us will be with you in the library :)
seriously, wait a few more weeks to give up the smoking. You are going to need something to help deal with the stress, and giving up ciggies can wait a couple more weeks. Don’t overload your plate.
@RedPowerLady I’m definatly going to notify everyone tomorrow. And I wish I had money for a cheap massage but I don’t have a pot to piss in right now.
@Gemiwing That’s usually what I do but I feel so overwhelmed now, it’s all I can do to stop my head from exploding.
@sevenfourteen Study some for me too!
@Psychedelic_Zebra I just decided to take your advice. After I broke down and cried….shameful
Thank you all. Even the thought of this being successful is helpful. Even if I end up lost, hungry and insane at least I’ll have the fluther.
You have gotten a lot of great advice here. The one thing I would add, is take time to BREATHE! (when you don’t have a lit cigarette in your hand of course.) Often when were stressed we breathe in short shallow spurts and it makes things worse. Take a few minuets every day to breathe deep and t breathe out deep. It won’t solve everything, but it will make everything a tad bit more tolerable.
You’ve gotten some great advice. In addition to all of that, you might also consider short term anti-anxiety meds. In this specific case, it might help you through the worst of it. Good luck with everything, and remember: we are here for you. :)
Update: The court date was postponed until March. Something with the judge. I will have money at that point to make sure I have a flight buddy. My exams will be over a done with. And I will have stopped smoking because I’m half-way done now! Thank you all for your support!
