Do you have to 'friend' someone on facebook to read messages sent?

Asked by trailsillustrated (16804points) November 11th, 2009

I have myspace and my son has friended me and my daughter hasn’t. I haven’t asked them to, and I know they both have fb too. I know my daughter’s father (my ex) reads her emails, from me, I don’t know if he reads all of them or just mine. I want to have a word with her privately without him reading it, so I messaged her on fb. I don’t want her to feel like she has to friend me or anything, I just want her to read my message. So, my question is, can she see the message and know what I said without ‘friending’ me?

yes, you can send messages to people without being their friends.

No you don’t have to friend them. You can send and receive messages from someone you are not friends with. I do that often when someone tries to add me and I have no idea who they are.

@RedPowerLady do they get a ‘friend invite or anything? or just the message?

@trailsillustrated Just the message. I think it is awesome you don’t want to put that pressure on your daughter btw. Cool mom ;).

@RedPowerLady thankyou, I don’t want her to feel pressured! I just want her to hear me and be able to answer without it being censored. Thankyou, again
