Are veggies that have been in the fridge a week too old to cook?
I have fresh mushrooms and green peppers that I put in my fridge after using half of them to go with a meal last Tuesday. Now I live at school but I got sick (not from veggies) last Friday and came back this Tuesday. I want to use the rest of the peppers and mushrooms in spaghetti but I’m not sure if they’re still good. They were a little mushy but I’m frying them and then putting them in the sauce. Is this ok or are they too old?

If they weren’t moldy and/or slimy, they are probably ok. Putting them in sauce is a really good way to use them up when they’re past their prime.
No, not necessarily. What matters is the condition they are in. It’s not like meat, which develops pathogens. The mushrooms actually increase in flavor as the gills open, and as long as the pepper isn’t moldy or really soggy/mushy, they will cook up just fine.
Thanks! I’m clear to cook dinner now :)
what @pdworkin said in many more words than I would have.
It’s better to be taciturn than tastelessly ostentatious.
@sevenfourteen You might as well go cook your veggies now; this thread is going seriously downhill. :-)
You can usually tell if they’re “rotten.” They will be slimy and smell bad. Veggies get “less good” for a while before they’re actually harmful to eat. I’ve had onions and bell peppers for weeks :/
I’m getting out of here before it gets ugly!
