Are we living in a delusion as it pertains to the word safe?

Asked by Landonscranton (82points) November 12th, 2009

People typically classify safe as: home, no threat, out of harms way, but is that really what we consider safe? or just what years of bad movies and bad parenting have conditioned us to believe?

I would say not feeling threatened is safe regardless of where you are. To put it simply. But I am interested in seeing what others say.

Safe is:
1. When the player touches the plate before being tagged
2. When someone tries to rob my home but hears the distinct sound of a shotgun being pumped and thinks better of it.
3. A big giant hunk of metal with a combo lock that holds my valuables.
4. America, in relation to many other countries.
5. It’s safe to say there are more.. but meh.

I don’t believe that our ideas on what it means to be safe are from “bad movies and bad parenting”. Being safe is when there is no threat to your physical (even mental) self. Threat could be anything from traffic to dogs, certain people to natural hazards. We have been taught to avoid life’s “threats” in order to protect ourselves; our safety.

Homes are considered safe because it is an enviroment that we have the most control over. It is a place where a person can basically barricade themselves in and protect themselves with force (weapons) if needed.

I stared at this question for a few minutes, not quite sure how to answer it. I hope I did a good job ;) I did just wake up! (Yes, Fluther is my “first thing to do in the morning” :D)

Not a delusion but sometimes we get assume our safety will be insured and get angry when “should be” isn’t, like in the case of wanting to cross a street when the signal allows but you aren’t able due to cars making right turns in succession and you miss your chance or the sense of safety when traveling abroad and assuming since you’re a tourist then you’re not to be affected or compromised by any local strife.

There’s no perfect safety, only unlikely harm.

To a large degree I think that Safety is a matter of perception.

I asked this question because I have always seperated safe and good. To me the safest thing is consistancy. If I walk down the same street every day and see a man with a knife looking at me every day, I could feel safe. The day I walk by and I don’t see that man, I would get scared. Sometimes people are so comfortable in situations that may be unhealthy that when the so called good stuff comes along, it begins to rock the boat. Now things don’t feel “right” even if it’s better. So, safe… Could it all be a matter of delusion? Or simply personal perspective? What is really “safe”? I guess the question has to be asked in several ways. 1. Is it protection
2.is it about comfort. 3. Are we even talking about a feeling or rather a perception. I guess it’s more a a philosophical question, but when I realized that for me personally, good things weren’t always what I considered safe… I thought I should get some feedback from other philosophical thinkers.
