How is "Ibiza" pronounced?

Asked by gggritso (5459points) November 12th, 2009

I know that different people from different countries pronounce it differently, what I want to know is how do people from Ibiza pronounce it? I always assumed it’s eeb-eet-tza.

It’s prounounced “ee-BEE-tha” in Spain Spanish. In English, it’s usually pronounced “ee-BEE-za” or more accurately “ih-BEE-za”.

I’ve been wondering this for ages. I have to type “Ibiza” a lot at work, and I’ve never been sure how to say it.

its I bee tha – castillion spanish

Mat74UK's avatar

@trailsillustrated isn’t that what I said?

@Mat74UK

You said “igh-bee-tha”; that’s not how it’s said in Castilian (that’s what it’s called). It’s said “ee-bee-tha” where the first two syllables rhyme with “tree”, not “try”.

trailsillustrated's avatar

@Mat74UK yes but you didn’t say that castillion is pronounced with a lisp hence the i bee THA

??? Both @DominicX and @Mat74UK pointed out the lisped pronunciation….

Ibiza, Miami, Florida = Must go at least once if you like to party, even though the turn out in the UK is much much larger!

Mat74UK's avatar

@trailsillustrated if you’re a proper English speaker you use your tongue the pronounce the THA not fa

@trailsillustrated (Don’t you mean “yeth”?)

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@Mat74UK: Yeah, the first syllable should be “ee” not “aye”. No one is disagreeing with you about the last syllable.
