What is it like, being an "antiques runner"?

Asked by beachwriter (361points) November 12th, 2009

I believe this is the name of a person who travels the world, finding art treasures for dealers. Does anyone know more about this field? Thank you!

I love dealing in Antiques even though i rarely travel to far! My budget isn’t big enough to travel the world, i don’t think you need to travel the world to be successful in the Antique business ;)

I love antiqueing! I’ve gone to the west and east coast, mainly to look for antiques!

You should ask seventhsense. I believe he has a business selling antique toys from all over the place.

@XOIIO What types of Antiques are you into?

I like to find stuff I can fix and get working again such as old lighters, and I recently found an old (really old!) camera that I could get wourkong again. I also like anything that just catches my eye and looks unique. I’ve gotten some pretty good deals in my time.

Same here, i’m like you, i like the restoring end of it also, i will buy mint stuff from time to time, but i like restoring stuff the most.

Well it can be fun, nerve wracking endlessly fascinating with the research and the cross cultural and historical references you run across, It can also be enraging with the amount of shysters and hucksters you run across. It can be exhilarating to find an auction purchase that everyone overlooked but you. It can be high anxiety when you’ve just invested all your discretionary income into purchases while you’re waiting on them to return a profit. Even when you’re 99% sure, they’re always that nagging doubt that this time you blew ‘the farm”. And then when you see that 200–500% profit…you’re just like..“ya I knew it”...It’s a tough road when you sign your own check, but I couldn’t have it any other way….I’m constitutionally incapable of working for anyone else now…I’m a little strong minded…not that anyone here can attest to that of course…I’m so meek.. :)~

Thanks for the props.
