Why don't women wear pantyhose more often?
That’s the question. It is mesmerizing to 25% of men. Those are very, very good odds for most women.

They strangle you; they ladder, they never fit properly, and they’re uncomfortable in other ways. (Think wedgie.)
@NewCityJack: Try wearing a pair to work for a day and get back to me.
Because they are a pain to put on, they get runs, they ride up or fall down..
and they aren’t too easy to get off in certain situations.
they’re extremely uncomfortable to walk in(usually they feel like saggy pants-at the crotch i mean)... and they go super high on the waist most of the time, which isn’t very useful when you’re wearing a skirt that rides on the hips. bare legs are sexier anyways. if you got’em, flaunt’em.
Because this isn’t 1959. I don’t know why I picked that year.
@tinyfaery: 1959 was even worse; garter belts and stockings that snagged as you were putting them on or pany girdles (also a horror) and stockings.
Everything said above PLUS, thank God, it is no longer in fashion to wear them. I hope we don’t see a trend to the opposite. Things that tend to be highly troublesome and/or irritating to wear have a short shelf life in fashion history. The pantyhose has had a long run, pardon the pun, and I think it will show up occasionally in the future, like leg warmers.
They’re uncomfortable. If I have to think about my clothes and how irritating and uncomfortable they are, I tend to get snippy and self-conscious.
Those of us with overactive bladders (not really, but pretty much) don’t enjoy struggling to get them off without a rip and then get them back up a million times a day. If it’s hot, they’re unnecessary, and if it’s cold, they aren’t warm, so there is never really an appropriate time to wear them. I prefer tights.
they look and feel unnatural
now tights…. whole other story!
I cannot wait for the colder weather to start wearing them again
I gather that the “panty” aspect is the most detested. What about stockings and knee-highs? Not such a hassle, but still not very functional/practical either; just a potent fashion accessory!
And just to point out, you sounded very sexist by saying it is mesmerizing to 25% of the men, good odds for the women. Heads up: we don’t care if panty hose is a turn on to men.
Go ahead and lose the pantyhose ladies.. it may be mesmerizing to 25% of men.. but guess what… women are mesmerizing to nearly 100% of straight men.. regardless of the status on the pantyhose.
As far as women attempting to appease men by wearing them.. well.. it’s a personal choice… if you intend on impressing an additional 25% of men.. so be it.. if not… oh well! A man who is going to be attracted by pantyhose over personality is a dimwit anyway.
As many have already said, pantyhose are acutely uncomfortable. I would rather be comfortable than “mesmerizing to 25% of men”.
Lol, and if you were interested in the percentage of men who were mesmerized by something you were thinking about wearing…25 isn’t all that convincing.
I love pantyhose and I find it very comfortable. I also think it makes our legs look great! Small kids seem to be fascinated by them, I tell them it is my second skin, like how Lizards shed their skin, hehe.
I know that wearing pantyhose is regional as well. In some areas where it is very hot it is not common to find women wearing pantyhose because it makes little sense.
I agree with @RedPowerLady, we seem to be the only ones in support of “pantyhose.” I call them tights. I wear them a lot; they’re sexy as hell. Very flattering to the legs. Makes them look more shapely and smooth, somehow.
@le_inferno Thank you! I wrote that before reading everyone else’s responses. I had no idea that I would be the only one in favor of them, lol. Now I’m not alone!
Interesting to see the passion on both sides of this issue. A provocative topic.
Pantyhose and tights are a pain because the waistbands cut on soft flesh and make for uncomfortable steamy crotch. I personally prefer garter belt and stockings for when the weather is cool enough I don’t want bare legs. And like @Facade says, they don’t impede sexy time.
I think the popularity of acrylic nails hastened their demise.
I don’t know how many I ruined in the bathroom!!
I’ve always hated hose and slips and the like. But I like tights—the opaque kind. I’d say women don’t wear them more because they are uncomfortable and get in the way of spontaneous sexy time.
Because they’re fucking horrendous. Hard to get on, hard to get off, tear up all the time, they DON’T make them in “short”... There are a million reasons. The main one is that you would never wear them, why would you expect us to?
Panty hose are too itchy..esp if you don’t shave before hand. Just thinking about wearing them makes me cringe.
God, where do I start?
1. They feel like they are cutting me in half at the waist
2. They are usually rolled up at the waist because they reach my breasts if pulled straight
3. They make my thighs and crotch sweaty
4. They make chub rub even worse
5. They run at the most inconvenient and embarrassing times
6. Who the hell has skin the color of “Suntan” hose??
7.The back of your skirt can get caught in them, resulting in unknowingly showing your bare ass to a lot of people (got this from Designing Women, but it did happen to me in HS – thankfully a friend told me before I left the bathroom!)
On the other hand, I quite like opaque tights and (instead of knee highs) trouser socks.
We forgot the obvious circulation and hygiene issue too: not the most breathable fabric to have secured against your body all day, every day.
Now stockings are another story: More of a fun novelty, when you have the time to wear them. And they can be any fabric.
I love tights and stockings, but I hate pantyhose mostly because I rip it (usually) the first time I wear it.
The word pantyhose actually makes me nauseous. Also, Panties. Beyond that @gailcalled was pretty succinct in her summary. I would just add that wedgies of that sort can sometimes be traumatic.
@nmac What is wrong with the word panties? Isn’t it dainty?
@nmac: Drawers, bloomers, undergarment? What difference does nomenclature make?Middle-class Victorians felt uncomfortable referring to piano legs.
I use my ancient pantihose, cut into pieces, to tie tall plants to stakes. It gives the garden a rakish touch.
I find pantie hose or panties very inviting indeed. In fact, woman whom wear and display their panties/pantyhose do so in a way to attract the other sex. It is very apparent when at a night club one can see the female sex displaying such activities to all around them. Also it would appear that they also revel in revealing their panties to all. I get really excited when around these females and very tempted to follow them in order to get a closer look. Can’t see anyone not agreeing with me on this one.
I hate the word “panties” too. It’s just icky to me. I usually just say underwear.
What is with the negative association to the word panties. I always thought it was feminine. Not icky or dirty. Where is this coming from?
Haha I always hated the word panties too! it’s just….weird! I don’t know why. Cant put my finger on it. But I never say it.
I call my hubbies underwear panties just to get to him. I think it is funny. I really want to know what is behind the panty hate.
It’s like “moist,” isn’t it? I’ll use the word if I have to, but I don’t like that word. “Panties” I’m OK with. But where does “drawers” come from? I’ve heard old people use that word and I don’t get it. [/off-topic]
@aprilsimnel Lol, I think it’s funny to call them drawers because it just doesn’t make any sense to me. I don’t see where it comes from.
@RedPowerLady That’s funny. I think I’ll start referring to my boyfriends underwear as panties too….hilarious!
@aprilsimnel that is funny, the one I really like is bloomers or chonies, i don’t typically use drawers but sometimes i do.
@deni Yay! We can become a cult. Hehe
Well. I guess it had to be “pantyhose”, eh?
Neither “drawerhose” “bloomerhose”, nor “choniehose” sound very marketable.
@aprilsimnel ROFL! Well I’m voting for choniehose just because it makes me laugh the most.
Perhaps drawers has something to do with where they were stored as opposed to other undergarments that, after ironing, couldn’t be folded like that? Or maybe you draw them upward?
