What is your method (preferably natural) for dealing with heartburn?

I had a little too much Sriracha in my lunch and the heartburn hit me hard while on the elliptical machine. I had a glass of ginger tea, which seems to have quelled it for the moment. I’ve also found that chewing gum relieves heartburn, but only while I’m chewing. When I stop, it seems to come back. Besides those two, I find that drinking seltzer and sometimes ginger ale works. I have relatives who swear by eating apples, carrots and even sunflower seeds to get rid of heartburn.
Despite trying to stick to the above natural methods, I have to admit that commercial stuff like Tums, Pepto Bismol, etc., work quickly and relieve heartburn more completely than the natural way.
What methods work for you? I’m in a position to try them out now, so hopefully it involves things I have in the house.

Silk chocolate soy milk is my go-to.
It’s doubtful that you have them in the house, but when I was pregnant, I had terrible heartburn and didn’t like the chalky taste of Tums. I did like papaya enzyme tablets – they were chewable and also had peppermint and clorophyll mixed in. They worked well for me.
papaya enzyme tablets
they work—try them!!
A spoon full of balsamic vinegar. It hurts going down, but it works.
My friend had chronic heartburn. It turns out that it was this. Two weeks on pills and it went away.
I use Gavescon and a glass of milk. But I might try some of these other remedies, I know that papaya is to be good for your stomach because of the pepsin. I have never seen them, do you get them at a health food store?
@johnpowell I know all about H. Pylori. I had an endoscopy to check out my stomach years ago. I went through the Prev-Pack and took Prevacid for nearly three years before I realized I could control my heartburn by losing weight and eating better. I don’t have chronic heartburn; it almost always comes after having Sriracha.
@drdoombot – that is really too bad, I love my Sriracha, I would hate to have to give it up.
Gatorade. Works wonders and it doesn’t take much.
Keep track of what foods trigger the heartburn. Be careful about eating too close to bedtime. Lying down can exacerbate the symptoms. I have to be careful with tomatoes, chocolate, and acidic citrus fruits.
(I just learned what Sriracha is. My esophagus burns just thinking about eating it. I have issues relating to chemo, which makes the mucus membranes in throat more sensitive.)
I have GERD and hence suffered from chronic heartburn. Sriracha was one of the things that kicked off heartburn, as were some other foods such as pizza. My solution is not pleasant but it works: no more Sriracha and no more pizza.
I do other things, too, but avoidance is the most effective and natural solution, especially if it is only one or two foods that always are the cause.
There is life without Sriracha. It just isn’t as interesting.
Selzer water usually does wonders for me.
I drink just plain water, and the feeling I have go away. I can’t say it is heartburn, but more like a tight feeling in my chest and esophagus, much like a charlie horse.
the solutions that worked for me was cutting back on serving size in general and no eating after 6pm.
^^. That’s the homeopathic way; Listen to Nora.
Where is the lurve? I am hearing you say that I gave a good answer, but I am not seeing the lurve? ;)
@noraasnave: Groveling counterbalances the GA~And other people (like me) said similar things, albeit not as succinctly.
Dang it, still as stubborn and hard willed as ever eh? Succinctly=great answer or at least the way I think. Grrr. oops, I guess I got a little lurve from someone. Thank you mystery lurve giver!
@noraasnave: Here are some commas: ,,,,,,,,,,, and some periods…......(and I believe it is strong-willed, but I do love to quibble.)
