What happens if you take Azithromycin with Omeprazole?

Asked by deepseas72 (1076points) November 14th, 2009

The Azithromycin package says do no take with an antacid. I forgot, and took my Omeprazole this morning. Should I skip todays dose of Azithromycin, take it later in the day, or just go ahead and take it now? All the pharmacies are closed right now.

I am not a doctor, however this is what I found while searching the internet:

“Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take Zithromax. This includes Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids can make Zithromax less effective when taken at the same time.”

Omeprazole doesn’t contain aluminum or magnesium, so I think you’re OK.

(And remember to take the whole course of the antibiotic! Stopping in the middle will just make things worse later)

I checked http://www.drugs.com/interactions-check.php and they said there were no interactions.

If the warning is about efficacy, not interactions, you can still take the other medicine. It will simply be less effective that way, but less effective is still more effective than not taking it at all.

If the warning is about interactions (or you do not know), it better to be safe than sorry and not take the other one.

If you skip the antibiotic it won’t work and you might have to start all over. Most like they say don’t take antacids with antibiotics because the antacids reduce stomach acid and in turn reduce the absorption of the antibiotic which reduces its efficacy, not because of a bad side effect. You might want to call a pharmacy, not the doctor, and see what they say (go to walgreens.com and click on a 24 hour pharmacy and call even if it is in another state). Maybe you should not take the Omeprazole for a week while you take the other drug since that reduces acid all day from what I understand? At minimum I would wait at least two hours and then take the antibiotic, I would not skip a dose.

I’m currently on omeprazole on a daily basis. When I was prescribed an antibiotic I was told the two are safe to be used together.

Avoid taking antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within two hours before or after you take Zithromax. This includes Rolaids, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, Maalox, Pepcid Complete, and others. These antacids can make Zithromax less effective when taken at the same time.

So if you took Zithromax with antacid it could be just not as effective. you should keep taking it on your regular schedule.
