sounds well to I.

How about “All attention was focussed on me”?

@patg7590: Your quip is not helpful for a non-native speaker.

@unodos; The correct way is ”..sounds good to me.”

unodos's avatar

so thats the right way to say it? all attention was focussed on me, if i said all attention was on me? did I sound stupid? was it acceptable?

gailcalled's avatar

It is fine; it is acceptable.

the point of language is to communicate with others, not to keep up spelling or grammar traditions. i understand it fine, so i say its ok.

noelasun's avatar

I’m not sure the context, but how about “all of the attention was on me”

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@gailcalled…...patg7590 was just playing. Chill, honey!

It’s fine to play with someone who speaks English as his first language. It is confusing when it is not. If I were learning Spanish, I would not appreciate any reciprocal behavior.

@poisonedantidote; There are a number of points to language; you can communicate with grunts and mumbles, if necessary; written English does have form and shape. It is true that it evolves, slowly, over time but there are still some reasons to follow most traditions.

‘All attention was on me’ is perfectly fine. There is no need to modify it unless the context calls for such a change. What is the context?

If you’re speaking out loud, it doesn’t necessarily matter how grammatically correct you are as much as it does when you are writing instead. See, if you read that last sentence out loud, it doesn’t sound horrible, but when you begin to think about it on paper (or screen), the wording seems to be less and less correct. Nobody, except for snooty NYC employers and the Queen of England, will really care about small imperfections. However, don’t get mad at me when people start to get annoyed if you start slacking off and talking like a south Alabamian.

gailcalled's avatar

@Fred931: Careful; some of my best friends live in southern Alabama.

Fred931's avatar

Ehem, I live in southern Alabama, too. I don’t muck about like that. 0:)

Its a letter. Im writting this sentence. “I wasn’t ready to adapt to this environment, it also didn’t help that all attention was on me.”

Fred931's avatar

I know the email of a particularly annoyingly perfect high school english teacher who would probably be wonderfully delighted! to help you. (I hate her so much.) I’ll tell you if it is officially correct or not once i get an email back.

gailcalled's avatar

@Fred931: Would you have preferred a sloppy, inaccurate and flawed HS English teacher?

Fred931's avatar

No, but she has to be one of the most annoying ever created. She’s about 50 and has a quite high pitched voice that she uses in her “Let’s sing a song!” attitude to give us tiresome assignments every ****ing day. School for me is not happy and cannot be made happy. By the way, most every other student in my graduating class says almost exactly the same thing.

nxknxk's avatar

@unodos
The only problem here is the comma splice. It would be better if it read like this: ‘I wasn’t ready to adapt to this environment. It also didn’t help that all (the) attention was on me.’

I added ‘the’ in parentheses because you can leave it out or put it in; it’s your choice.

@Fred931
Just so you know: ‘I’ll tell you if it is officially correct’ is not grammatically correct.

gailcalled's avatar

@Fred931: I’m sorry that you are (were) unhappy in school. Not everyone is meant to be an intellectual.

patg7590's avatar

@gailcalled sorry I didn’t know the OP was a non-native English speaker. :-P

Fred931's avatar

@gailcalled I’m an honor roll student; it’s not that I am unintelligent, I just don’t like school.
@nxknxk pun intended?

unodos's avatar

I used the word adapt correctly? when do you use adopt? adopt a child?

mangeons's avatar

Yes, the correct way to say it would be “all attention was on me.”

Yes, you used the word “adapt” correctly, you could use the word “adopt” in situations like “adopt the customs of these people” as well as “adapt to the customs of these people.” but in the way you are using it, you would use “adapt”, as you did.

gailcalled's avatar

@Fred931: I did not mean to apply that you were not intelligent. I was responding, with regret, to the fact that you don’t like school. What would you choose to do if you had the choice?

Fred931's avatar

I don’t like school for nearly the same reasons most other high school students don’t like school, but most of us just live with it.

gailcalled's avatar

To the contrary, I and 4 of the 5 kids loved school, as did my nieces and nephews (except for that slacker, Ben, who spent most of his time on the corner, playing three-card monte).

I worked for years in a school where most of the students were thrilled to be there.

mangeons's avatar

I like school pretty well and fine, but physics just sucks. ):
