Happy music wanted. Nay, needed!

Asked by ModernEpicurian (1638points) November 15th, 2009

I’m feeling rather down at the moment, for more reasons than I would care to go into.
In order to cure these oh so inconvenient blues I would normally listen to music.
So…
Could any Flutherites recommend any songs that could cheer me up? Be they comedic in nature or just merely upbeat and smiley!

I am listening to John Coltrane (The Ultimate Blue Train) right now, and its’ pretty upbeat and snappy. Jazz does that for me, though.

I love Jazz, i use a lot of Jazzy riffs and elements in my Drum & Bass…

Patsy Cline – Back in Baby’s Arms
Ivy – Edge of the Ocean
Beastie Boys – Ch-Check it Out
Grateful Dead – Ripple – This song just makes me think of leisurely driving on a summer’s day. The American Beauty version is my favorite, but I couldn’t find it online
Goldfinger – 99 Red Balloons

A bit pop/cookie-cutter, but happy and upbeat, nonetheless:

Jason Mraz: I’m Yours
Owl City: Fireflies
Train: Hey, Soul Sister

Happy Feet by 8½ Souvenirs. This was the only version I could find that included the words – you’ll just have ignore the phallic chocolate fountain

And this – it’s the best version i could find on the web of Ouverture by la Bottine Souriante, a Quebec band. The original version is on one of their albums, longer and you can hear the horns better. Always give me an uplift when I hear it.

I have just the tonic…..:)

A few years ago, someone introduced me to the songs of Tom Lehrer. He was quite a famous singing comedian/writer/satirist in the 50s and 60’s. He sings and plays the piano and it took me about thirty seconds into his first song to realize,” Did HE just SING that??” It is the funniest musical CD I have ever heard because the songs are witty, silly and extremely well-crafted and others have bits off totally off-the-wall dark humor.

Lehrer, interestingly enough was also a mathematician, graduated from Harvard with a B.A. and M.A. and even worked at Los Alamos…but his fame came through his songs and his writing. In one song called “The Elements” he puts all the elements in the periodical table to the “Major-General’s Song” from “Pirates of Penzance.” It’s something only a songwriter who graduates from Harvard would think of doing, I think and making it really funny, too.

Definitely, if you are down….please give a listen. You will not be in the doldrums after this. He has a lot of CD’s but the one that I have heard is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Concert-Tom-Lehrer/dp/B000026FOX/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1258319493&sr=8-9

Also…if you technically want “Happy” songs. Clinique, the cosmetic company came out with a CD called “C’mon Get Happy” about 10 years ago ( if you bought the cosmetics). All the songs on it have “Happy” in the title…like “C’mon Get Happy”...“Make Someone Happy”....“Happy Together”, etc. (With original artists.)
It’s available on Amazon Marketplace for….1 American penny.

Happy Listening!

Livin’ La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin
Pretty much anything by Reel Big Fish

Drawkward's avatar

@five99one That is about the ONLY Modest Mouse song I’d recommend for the mood of happy.

five99one's avatar

@Drawkward Yes, I know. Some of their other songs make me happy, but they are not generally happy.

Drawkward's avatar

@five99one I’ve heard them described as “music for when you feel like dying”. I still love them though.

five99one's avatar

@Drawkward Really? That’s how I would describe Radiohead, not Modest Mouse.

Drawkward's avatar

@five99one The entire album Lonesome Crowded West feels like bleeding out.
