What is a favorite treat of yours that doesn't exsist any more?

Asked by valdasta (2146points) November 15th, 2009

When I was growing up (70’s), we used to eat Nutrition Sticks. They came individually wrapped, shaped like a five inch Slim Jim, brown, and tasted like chocolate. Supposedly, the astronauts enjoyed them (I am sure they washed it down with Tang).

I haven’t seen Nutrition Sticks since, and no one seems to know what I am talking about.

Is there a product you used to consume, but it no longer exists? Perhaps it has changed and is no longer a favorite of yours?

I loved the little stick candy cigarettes. Also Rock Candy. Hard to find in clear dye free. (The dye is a dead-giveaway that you have been eating candy- not good for adults.)

Zotz were great.

I do not remember nutrition sticks- wish I did.

Oh- large sweet tarts- the not-chewy ones. Those were great.

faye's avatar

I loved candy cigs-had forgotten about them. Not a politically correct treat now!

DominicX's avatar

@Dog

I didn’t know they had large non-chewy SweetTarts. (I’m a big SweetTarts fan).

Right now, I’m just missing the lemon-flavored SweetTarts because they got rid of them this year. It’s absolutely preposterous. The lemon ones were always my favorite; why the hell would you get rid of them?

@faye

They still make candy cigarettes. At least, they have them at the candy store in Virginia City, Nevada. I was just there this summer and I got some.

valdasta's avatar

@The candy-cig-lovers: I saw some in a Detroit gas station the other day…took me back.

faye's avatar

Wow, I would think people would complaaaain!

DominicX's avatar

@faye They might if they don’t have a sense of humor…

aprilsimnel's avatar

I used to love Carnation Instant Breakfast Bars. They have long since been discontinued.

Why am I still up?

Dog's avatar

@DominicX What??? They got rid of the LEMON???? Why? they were the best ones!!!

I am so bummed.

valdasta's avatar

What was the chocolate bar that was in the shape of a chain-link? It was long, too.

DominicX's avatar

@Dog

Yeah, I bought a big bag of SweetTarts on Halloween and saw that there were no lemon ones. Then I looked online and it said that they discontinued the lemon flavor in 2009. It’s total bullplop.

Dog's avatar

@DominicX That is just plain wrong. I saved them for last because they were the best.
The original sweet tarts were the same size as the giant chewy ones but they were like huge tart smartees, They were pressed powder and were great,

HGl3ee's avatar

Jelly-Tots! Oh where, oh where did they go? :(

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@AstroChuck Space Food Sticks are still available.

I remember the giant Sweet Tarts, too. A lot of the stuff we used to eat as kids is still available online. I met a young truck driver the other day that was eating Bottle Caps. I hadn’t had any of those in about forty years.

I just found a new favorite candy website. It has a search bar to find what you want in old time candy.

Dog's avatar

I am addicted to the root beer bottle caps.

Nehi Orange Soda Pop

Shuttle128's avatar

For a while Nestle Flips were discontinued…..but they came back a few years later. I was glad.

Didn’t Starburst stop selling original flavors for a bit….or was I just extremely unlucky at trying to find them for a year or so?

Resonantscythe's avatar

I’m not sure it’s so much they don’t exist as they don’t exist near me, but when I was younger I used to love muching on these sugary calcium sticks my mom had in the cupboard. Haven’t had one in years. So good. And the original formula Vanilla Coke that had the vanilla aftertaste as opposed to the reissued one that was a vanilla mixed taste that was also discontinued.(or at least I don’t see either anymore) Man oh man did I love that soda.

I’ve drank way too much coke actually. I can taste the difference between bottled, canned, glass bottled, poured from a two liter, and fountain poured. Also, if it’s ever watered down at some place that has a fountain, I know instantly. McDonald’s is more watered down than Wendy’s, while cineplex is usually less watered down unless it’s one of those smaller ones. Oddly, small business is usually the least watered down of all. at least in my experience.

Life Savers used to come in so many flavors! In addition to the popular roll of five fruit flavors, cherry, orange, lemon, lime, and pineapple, you could buy a whole roll of any one of those flavors—a whole roll of red, orange, etc. There were the secondary fruit flavors, too—the roll with watermelon, raspberry, etc. There were single-flavor rolls of butterscotch, butter rum, root beer, grape, and even (ugh) chocolate. And then there were all the white ones: PepOmint, WintOgreen, SpearOmint, clove, cinnamon, and clear CrystOmint. I’m sure there were more. The Life Savers display used to be one of the largest in the candy rack. I had my favorites, but I cycled through all of them over time. Now only a paltry few remain to recall Life Savers’ former glory.

A lot of old favorites that are now hard to find can be had at the Vermont Country Store. If you crave something they don’t have, they’ll try to find it.

I really miss Pringles Corn Crisps
The cheese-flavored variety was my favorite. Been waiting almost 20 years for them to bring ‘em back.

Shuttle128's avatar

@Resonantscythe I know exactly what you’re talking about! I loved the original Vanilla the new one is a bit less pronounced. I prefer cans usually because they keep their CO2, but straight out of a cold 2-liter is the best. If you haven’t already, try Mexican bottled Coke (it uses sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup).

@Jeruba I used to eat WintOGreen and PepOMint Lifesavers all the time.

Resonantscythe's avatar

@Shuttle128 oh yeah, the mexican bottles are great! but I’ve always loved the bottles from my birthplace best. The last time I was there the bottles were something like forty ounces and only Five Pesos. At the exchange rate at the time, that was like Five cents!

@Jeruba Ever see Robin hood: Men in tights? You reminded me of the scene where the sheriff of Rottingham is accidentally run through and the witch comes in telling him she’ll give him a magic pill that will save his life if he will marry her. Guess what she feeds him. : D

Shuttle128's avatar

@Resonantscythe Sounds like my kinda place! My roommate is Mexican and doesn’t understand why I make such a big deal out of it.

Jeruba's avatar

I forgot to mention: they were five cents each, too.

valdasta's avatar

@AstroChuck maybe I am thinking of Space food sticks and not nutrition sticks?

bunnygrl's avatar

They used to make tiny little cloth drawstring bags which had little “gold nuggets” I loved those little sweets when i was young. Anyone remember them? I used to save the little bags :-) hugs xx

jenandcolin's avatar

They are not impossible to find but, I am kind of obsessed with chocolate covered raspberry licorice sticks. The ones at Walgreen’s are especially good…I drive all the way to the other end of town to get them. I wish they were sold in more places.

J0E's avatar

I think it’s around still, but I haven’t been able to find any. It’s called ‘All-Sport’ and it’s an sports drink like Gatorade. I used to have it all the time but then it kinda disappeared.

sakura's avatar

@ElleBee you can still buy jelly tots!! http://www.rowntrees.co.uk/range/jellytots.aspx
I loved a sweet they looked like chewits, shape and size but they were white with 3 green stripes around and they were minty I think they were called stripes. I remeber getting them when I used to go and watch the Butlins red coat shows!!

poofandmook's avatar

They’re not discontinued, but the filling in Cadbury Creme Eggs has changed so much, I don’t really consider them the same thing. Still one of my favorites, but back when the filling oozed out when you bit it, it tasted much better.

And not really a treat, but as I was discussing with someone in another thread… KFC chicken littles. I MISS them.

wundayatta's avatar

Real Moxie. They do sell something called Moxie in Northern New England, but it is awful, sweetened with corn syrup. The company has, no doubt, been bought out several times, so who knows if the original recipe is still around.

stratman37's avatar

Anyone remember Chum Gum?

HGl3ee's avatar

@sakura : Oh my! That’s incredible! Thank you and much lurve! <3

jonsblond's avatar

Nabisco’s Lemon Cooler cookies. My mother always bought them for us as a snack during road trips. I haven’t seen them in years.

I also loved Gold Nugget bubble gum as a child. I’m not a big fan of gum anymore, but I know that you can still buy this at the Cracker Barrel gift shop.

Shuttle128's avatar

Aha! Animal Treasures Girl Scout Cookies! Those used to be my second favorite (aside from thin mints) and they no longer sell them. The Thanks-A-Lot is not a great replacement for them.

DominicX's avatar

@jonsblond

They definitely have Gold Nugget bubblegum in Virginia City. Everything’s there. :)

I also miss Lemon Coolers. I remember there used to Lemon Coolers Girl Scout cookies and then they got rid of those too. What is it with all this abolishing “lemon”? Has it become too expensive to make that flavor anymore?

poofandmook's avatar

@Shuttle128: are you actually trying to tell me that there’s a Girl Scout cookie that even tries to be as good as the samoa?

Allie's avatar

There used to be a cafe in town that made cappuccino chip muffins. They were nothing short of delicious. I used to get one every Wednesday morning since that was the day I went in late to school. A few years back the cafe went out of business. No other place around here makes them (that I know of) so now they’re just a memory. I really miss them though. If anyone has an idea of how to make them, let me know.

Shuttle128's avatar

@poofandmook Personally I don’t like coconut at all so my top three were always Thin Mints, Animal Treasures, and Peanut Butter Patties….mmmm. Only 46 days, 8 hours, and 6 minutes until cookie season begins!

@DominicX There are currently 2 lemon flavored Girl Scout Cookies: the Lemon Chalet Cremes and the Lemonades

jonsblond's avatar

@DominicX I love lemon flavored treats. At least we can still buy Lemonheads!

filmfann's avatar

Lurve to @AstroChuck , like he needs it, for Mothers Iced Raisin Cookies I miss those.
I cannot find Alpha-Bits cereal anymore.

valdasta's avatar

@stratman37 Thanks for the link…yes! Marathon Bar.

boffin's avatar

Not a treat or snack in the true sense…
I miss my “Maypo”...

I think it’s still available on line?

aprilsimnel's avatar

@boffin, I was looking up the work of the Hubley Studio on YouTube and I came across the commercials the Hubleys did for Maypo with their then-4 year old son, Mark. Adorable. He’s got to be in his late 50s by now.

evegrimm's avatar

@Allie, I don’t know what your muffins were like (i.e. fillings, consistency, etc.), but here are two recipes I found that might do the trick: William Shatner’s Cappuccino Muffins and Cappuccino-Chip Muffins. You’ll have to let us know if either works out for you—and share, of course! :D

boffin's avatar

@aprilsimnel Thanks I’ll check it out…

Blondesjon's avatar

Soft boiled Dodo eggs and spit roasted Passenger pidgeon.

Dog's avatar

@Blondesjon Yeah- I miss those too.

Psychedelic_Zebra's avatar

@bunnygrl thanks for the memory, I used to save those little bags too. They were great for storing away secret treasures. Was it this one? That’s the one I remember.

bunnygrl's avatar

@psychedelic Zebra Oh my god!!!! that’s it!!! our little bags (in the UK) had smaller all over pattern writing on the bags but those are the ones!!!! <hugs> thank you so much for that link, brought back happy memories :-) I used to use one to keep my pocket money (allowance) in. what lovely memories that brings back, happier times. Thank you, thank you <hugs> xx

AstroChuck's avatar

They still have those. My daughter returned from a field trip to a gold mine and brought home a bag of the gold nugget gum from their gift shop.

bunnygrl's avatar

@astrochuck I haven’t seen them here for years, these things tend to make a comeback sometimes though, so who knows, maybe they’ll come back again someday for future generations of kids to enjoy :-) hugs xx

bunnygrl's avatar

look what I found online: http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/gold-nuggets-bubblegum-p-1310.html not the same bags as I remember but still :-)
hugs xx

jonsblond's avatar

@bunnygrl I linked to that above. Somehow I missed that you were looking for the name of this gum. I should read the responses more carefully. Silly me. I loved getting it as a child. I would save the bags like @Psychedelic_Zebra and store all sorts of things inside. I always felt like I had a secret treasure! :)

AstroChuck's avatar

I also used to get bubblegum gelt. They still make the coins with chocolate inside but I haven’t seen any with the gum anymore.

zenele's avatar

The long, green and red licorice-like candy. Really thin.

The gum gelt too, and also the special gum from baseball cards – the powdery gum that smelled and tasted so unique.

Hot hot cinnamon candies.

Dog's avatar

@DominicX What!? They got rid of the lemon ones? That was the BEST flavor! :(

kritiper's avatar

I never had any, but originally, Twinkies were filled with banana flavored filling instead of just whipped cream. I would LOVE to taste one!
Back in the late 60’s there was a product that you mixed with milk, like NestlĂ©‘s. It was called Great Shakes.

kritiper's avatar

@zenele You can still find Fireball jaw breakers. HOT cinnamon candy, boy!
