Are there any OTC remedies that can kill a tooth infection?

Asked by FutureMemory (24758points) November 16th, 2009

2nd tooth infection since September (different tooth), trying to avoid another visit to the doctor if I can help it. (I’m not sure if another antibiotic would help anyway, I’ve heard immunities are built up fairly quickly (?).

Any advice?

I had an abcess on my gum once, and used TCP (diluted and used as a mouthwash) and that cleared it in no time. hope you feel better soon, hugs xx

From WebMD: To relieve the pain and discomfort associated with an abscessed tooth, warm salt-water rinses and over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) can be used.

And it sounds like to rid of the infection, you will need to see a dentist.

Go online and buy oral penicillin (pill, NOT pediatric liquid). Dentist cannot do any serious work until that infection is eliminated.

Best that you do all of this with Dentist prescription and care.

no – go and see a dentist. Trust me the sooner you get to the dentist the easier it is to treat (easier also means less expensive, I’ve seen a dental abscess that led to septicaemia, meningitis and a brain abscess. It required several emergency surgeries to sort out the mess and months in hospital recovering) bit extreme I know, but I thought I’d share

you need to go in- @Lightlyseared is right, if it’s an upper tooth it can go through your sinus to your brain. Also it will get worse if not treated, if you need a root canal you need one. They don’t go away.

Go to the dentist ASAP. Otherwise something along the lines of this may develop.

Don’t mess with dental care. See a dentist. I know it totally sucks, because they’re expensive, but it’s a necessary evil.

I had some trouble with my teeth recently and I know your pain and frustration. Unfortunately for you the only thing you can really do is go to the dentist if you did manage to clear up the abcess on your own, its just going to keep coming back until you either get the tooth extracted or root canaled. Good luck!

1 bottle of liquor (your choice)
1 pair of pliers (boiled for twenty minutes)
1 giant pair of brass balls

or what all of those ^^ pansies said

I would never trust a drug from online! And when do you not need a script? Teeth are like cars- they just don’t get better on their own. at least in my life

Thanks for the replies. I really do need to see the dentist, I guess lack of funds started we wondering what I can do at home first.
