Do you trust your gut instincts?

Asked by Justnice (923points) November 16th, 2009 from iPhone

I’m debating if I should trust my gut feeling about something or let it go.

I do trust my gut. But, not if it means jumping out of a window or something.

Me? No, I’m unlucky. Given a 50/50 chance, I’ll usually land on the wrong side 90% of the time. It’s so bad, that I actually plan it out in advance.

Counterpoint: if you’re gut is telling you that the babysitter you never met before and has just shown up at your house for the very first time is not someone you think you can trust your children with, then yes, trust your gut. Every time.

Yes… at 43 years old, I can not recall a time when it was wrong. And there were many times I tried to ignore or deny it over the years and learned the hard way!

It depends on the situation a lot.

Gut feelings are usually a pretty good way to go for many situations, though. I often find that when I go against my instincts things seem to go awry. Example: I was planning a weekend trip in spite of my feelings that it wouldn’t go well. I went anyway, and it ended up being one of the most miserable weekends of my life.

But other times you can’t go with your gut instincts, usually when a lot of different people/elements are involved. It takes a lot of thinking to figure out what the right reaction is, even if it’s not what you would do instinctually.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Yep. Your gut feelings are almost always right.

No. I wish I did but often I ignore or go against it and just as often I should have followed my gut. I know I need to but I don’t trust myself enough. :( So my advice is to follow your gut even if your mind says no.

Yes almost always.

My intuition kicks ass.

If something seems fishy to me, I usually will at least stop long enough to investigate.

Yes. I do because somewhere deep, DEEEEP down inside of me knows what to do and tells the rest of me through the grape vine, to do it.

I can’t count the times my gut feeling has been right (probably 95% of the time) but i haven’t went with it, only to think to myself why didn’t i go with my gut feeling?

Always trust your gut. It’s when you don’t that things have the potential to be hazardous or go wrong. Like my father always told me after I took a test, and would change my answer, “Your first guess is always the right one.”

I’ve used logic in my decisions so much that I don’t feel that there is much of a difference between my gut feeling and a conscious logical choice. So yeah, I guess you could say I go with my gut.

My gut tends to be weirdly right about lots of things, so I’ve learned not to ignore it. (For instance, even though it’s mostly clear/no chance of rain, my gut will tell me to take an umbrella. I don’t, it pours.) So, yeah, I trust my gut—but at the same time, know the difference between paranoia and your gut. Sometimes I get them confused. :P

I trust it. I just sometimes do not listen.

MoxyMaiden's avatar

Yes, I do.

I didn’t always, though, and when I started trusting it it took a long time for me to figure out what was my gut letting me know something and what was just an impulse to do something.

I’d say, listen to yourself as a whole, and if there’s a bit that seems right most of the time, it’s probably with trusting with more.
