Is everything in life worth doing?

Asked by nikolinaxitaliax (55points) November 16th, 2009

All these troubles we face and the feelings we are stuck with add up and cause so much confusion and doubt. I just can’t seem to see past all the bad, to realize the little good.

It depends on what it is you do

Your question is somewhat ambiguous, can you clarify it?

You’re the only person who can decide whether life is worth it or not. Dare I say, almost all of us reach this point at least once in our life. To me life is worth it all, the good and the bad. I do not fear death, but I choose to live. I choose it because there are things I have yet to accomplish and life I have yet to experience. What helps me is waking up every day and finding one thing that makes me smile, just one little thing to help me through the day. It is sometimes as simple as a smile I see on a stranger’s face, a stranger that was not smiling until I smiled at them. And sometimes I am lucky enough to find a more significant reason to smile, like knowing I have people in my life who love me and will always try to make me smile when I am down.

So is everything in life worth doing? I plan on doing everything that I possibly can to find out.

I don’t know how old you are, but I want to tell you that I enjoy life much more now that I am older, even though I have had some trying health issues. I find incredible enjoyment in simple things. I appreciate the absence of pain, and things that affect the senses, like beautiful music, majestic views, my warm cozy bed, and the happiness I experience being with my husband, and experiencing new things.

Almost every person I know agrees that life gets better, especially as you move into your 40’s and have more perspective.

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

Live life, but live it the way you want, do things you want to do. Pretty simple really lol

dpworkin's avatar

Love and Work and Art are all worth it, no matter the pain.

nikolinaxitaliax's avatar

to clarify= im saying that all the B.S. we are putting up with daily.. will it eventually pay off

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

I don’t actually put up with a lot of B.S, i weed problems and negativity out of my life very fast,

Adagio's avatar

@Niko… can you clarify what you mean by bullshit, just general bullshit?

Adagio's avatar

If you are speaking of general type bullshit… welcome to life
I am not intending to make light of your query by the way. Only you can decide if the pain attached to one aspect of life makes it worth pursuing. To some degree the decision gets easier with age, but not entirely, definitely not entirely. Ask yourself what you are gaining, and if the price outweighs the reward then maybe you would be better off without it, only you can decide.

nikolinaxitaliax's avatar

haha well i mean the everyday dealing with people who put you down and hurt you and yeah i guess the general… yeah dumb question i guess

jeanna's avatar

@nikolinaxitaliax Not a dumb question at all!

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

Like i said, this is stuff that can be avoided, no need to put up with anything if it can be easily gotten rid of..

According to Frankl (1959/1962/1984, 1978),
the conditions of modern society have left many individuals with
a feeling of meaninglessness—an affliction he refers to as an existential
vacuum. When this condition remains unresolved, individuals
are said to “lack the awareness of a meaning worth living for.
They are haunted by the experience of their inner emptiness, a void
within themselves” (Frankl, 1959/1962/1984, p. 128). Frankl further
contends that “the existential vacuum manifests itself mainly in a
state of boredom” (p. 129).

The less status and power you have, the more you have to put up with.

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

@airowDee I totally disagree with your statement in more ways than i care to elaborate on.

airowDee's avatar

Well, you might have status and power in this society, and you like to think the world is fair so you can live with yourself at night.

Regardless, many of us don’t have real choices to exercise whether you like to hear it or not.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

We do so much that isn’t worth doing.

OutOfTheBlue's avatar

@airowDee No, i just find and eliminate what it is that is bothering me. Not saying that i don’t get frustrated and that i fix everything, but most of the time i am not putting up with bullshit because i found out long ago i simply don’t have to , it has nothing to do with power or status. To make it even easier, just don’t let it get to you?

You have to let go. Life will always be what life is.
It is a mystery. ;-)

Find pleasure in everything and anything you can.
You only go around once, and it only matters to you.

I’m 35, and for the most part I have decided that life is pointless and in the end you die alone, with only your guts to go with you. You can do two things with this info. 1. Descend into nihilism and apathy and live a miserable, meaningless life or 2. Hey, if it all means nothing in the end, enjoy everything you can. Give life whatever meaning you choose. I waver between the two.

Life is difficult for everyone. Nut up or Shut up.
Do good in other peoples lives and yours will be of value to everyone else. Then I guess what you do in life would matter. There is tons and tons of good out there, and if you can’t find any then make some good.

wildpotato's avatar

Almost everything in life is worth doing. Remember that life is long. You won’t always feel the way you do now. In the immortal words of Savoy Brown: it’s so easy to relax if you try… just lie back and unwind.
