Has any body ever used a private detective?

Asked by pplufthesun (617points) November 16th, 2009

I am a movie junkie, and in lots of films, there is a private investigator, and I was wondering, are they like how they are depicted in the films? Has anybody ever used one? What was your result? Any stories?

My older brother ran away, and we used a private detective to see if we could see why, and where he went.

Everything I learned about them is from watching the new HBO show “Bored to Death”; if they’re anything like that, I’d like to be one.

I would never trust them with my private information. The risk of them selling my personal information (and that of other clients) to the industry for marketing analysis is just too big. So no. Never.

Because of court problems, I needed to get pictures of my daughter’s bf’s gang tattoos.
I called a PI, and asked if he could get them. The boy played football, and he could get pics of him on the field.
The guy asked “How will I know which one he is?”
I said “His name will be in big letters on the back of his jersey!”
The gang connection scared the PI off. He was obviously an idiot, anyway.
It did change my perception of what PI’s are. I always thought they were tough and smart, like Bogart.

I had a stalker during my freshman year in college. The campus police tried to deal with him but he was persistent. I had to have a friend with me at all times, particularly when I had night labs at the Observatory.

He eventually left me alone; decades later I learned that my father had hired a private detective to scare the shit out of this guy.

My parents pretended to have forgotten the details even though I was in my late thirties.
