Why isn't my linux firewall opening ports?

Asked by frankielaguna (256points) November 17th, 2009

I’ve been fussing around with opening up 1 simple port on a dedicated linux server which is using “Linux Firewall” iptables.

I’ve added the port (3306) in the tables using Webmin and terminal but it still will not let me connect remotely.

I’ve restarted iptables many times and it still won’t work.

Here is the output of iptables -L

Please help.

I’m not sure what Linux distribution you’re using and I don’t have that much experience with firewalls, and especially not with command line firewalls, but Ubuntu includes “ufw” which supposedly is a far easier front-end to iptables which you might find easier too.

Why are you trying to forward a port? I’m guessing to have users connect to you in which case you would need to forward the port on your router. Maybe this will help: http://portforward.com/
