What fictional character do you most identify with, and why?
This is one of my favorite questions to ask people because I feel I can learn a lot about them based on their answer.
Me, I’d have to say I identify most with Calvin of Calvin & Hobbes, which is why he pops up as my avatar from time to time.
So, who is it? :)

I don’t know who I would identify with nowadays but I remember a few years ago I watched Girl Interrupted for the first time and I cried because I identified too much with Angelina Jolie’s charactor (I bellieve she’s called Lisa in the book and film) and I knew then that if I didn’t get help for my “issues” life would not be good.
I suppose technically the charactor of Lisa is not exactly fictional seeing as the book was based on truth but she stuck out in my mind more than any other.
I like this question, I wish I had an answer. I think I don’t read enough fiction to have an answer. It will be interesting to see what others write.
<—- The name says it all.
Kanji Sasahara from Genshiken
@holden shouldn’t your avatar be something more along the lines of this?
@buckyboy28 when you shrink it down to thumbnail size, don’t you think it kind of looks like a big, gaping vagina?
@holden I don’t know what vaginas you’ve been looking at lately.
@JLeslie – It doesn’t have to be from a book.. could be a movie or TV character. :)
I am, and have always been, Jo March. I read way more than is good for me, I’m a little unconventional, have always felt more comfortable with my male friends, cut my hair on a semi-frequent basis, and have a nasty temper that plagues me. In addition, I’m one of four children and I’d do anything for my family.
@MissAnthrope I’ll think about it. :) Maybe I will come up with something.
Han Solo, except I’m allergic to wookies.
@MissAnthrope I too identify with Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes. In elementary school I got a Spaceman Spiff award for daydreaming in class.
@JLeslie : Fictional to me could mean a tv or movie character, too. The poster didn’t specify! Still, I don’t have an answer. Maybe Ralphie from A Christmas Story.
Gerund, or maybe Maquin from Evan Dahm’s Rice Boy. Not a main character, but definitely a loyal companion.
Aside from Calvin, who just kind of speaks for himself, I also identified a lot with Dana from The L Word. Her cute dorkiness, social awkwardness, and general social/relationship difficulties were like watching myself.
Hal Incandenza on account of the whole silence thing going on with him in the beginning and towards the end of Infinite Jest.
But presumably any well-crafted character is going to be identifiable, so this is kind of a difficult question for me.
Gregor Samsa because entomologists bug me.
I think that in real life, I’m much like Gaston Lagaffe. I share his point of view on what it means to be an adult, and on what it does not. And possibly his general demeanour too.
Combine that with Professor Tournesol (I refuse to use his Anglicised name :P) from Tintin. Or the quirky absent-minded professor archetype in general, I guess.
And I’m probably talking about characters most of you never heard of.
As for my sceptic pseudo-intellectual science fanboy side you guys have probably come to know, I’m not sure what character could represent that. Sokka?
Hermione from Harry Potter…just not completely
oh and Dr. Faust
Alice. From Alice in Wonderland.
Jesus.
Always concerned for my fellow man.
@ChazMaz
“What fictional character…”
“Jesus.”
I see what you did there.
I don’t tend to identify with fictional characters. I have a fantastic image of myself inside a sort of fantasy world in my own head. Like reality- but it goes to eleven. Soooo…. SuperMe?
Ellen Griswold. Family is very important to me, my life is full of surprises and I don’t put up with bullshit.
Donna Boyd wrote a werewolf novel entitled “The Passion”. I’ve always identified with Tessa, to the point that I’m certain I would have done the exact same things.
Lucy Van Pelt because real estate is the best gift, and I married a Charlie Brown type.
Anton Lavrentyevitch, the narrator of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, also known as The Devils and The Demons, for both his loyalty and his critical thinking skills.
Edina Monsoon from Absolutely Fabulous…but without the money and the sad clothes
Le Petite Prince.
I have blue blood running in my veins.
Gromit. I am dependable and go with the flow.
Elizabeth Bennett because I am witty and charming and still looking for Mr. Darcy.
Tom Sawyer.
Now if you’ll all excuse me, I have a fence to whitewash.
Leopold “Butters” Stotch, of course. Linus Van Pelt as well. And Kal El.
Why Kal El? He is a true blue, honest boy scout who believes in Truth, Honor, and the American Way, but he secretly wishes he could be as morally wreckless as Batman.
Edward Cullen. I’m probably the most beautiful person you’ll ever meet in your life. Ever.~
Peter Vincent, vampire killer!
@toomuchcoffee911: Do you also stalk your love interests and dismantle their vehicles so they can’t hang out with other people? Will you date me? ~
I don’t really find myself identifying with characters I read or watch. I will identify with one or two character traits, but I’m so fucking weird that it would take a miracle for an author/screenwriter to write a character that I really identified with. There are definitely characters that I would love to be more like, but that’s it.
Which is not to say that I’m awesomely unique or anything, because I’m totally not. :P
Hrm.
Mostly Hermione Granger-Weasley (smart, smart-ass) with a dollop of Edna Mode (stylish, short, specs) and just a smidge of Elizabeth Bennet (resourceful, fine eyes, lively and playful disposition)
@evegrimm you summed it up for me too. There is no one person, cartoon, character that I can identify with, because I seem to have traits that typically don’t go together, or you don’t see together? Maybe? Or, fictional characters are too narrow and are unlike real people?
@evegrimm
There are plenty of fucking weird characters, though. They’re quite popular these days.
Examples include Osaka, Luna Lovegood (and half of the Harry Potter cast in general), Doctor House, Dick Solomon…
Well, look up the list yourself.
Warning: the above website will probably steal the rest of your afternoon from you. Do not visit when on a tight schedule.
Of course, it’s not guaranteed any one of them has the particular flavour of weirdness you’re looking for.
I’ve been thinking about this question for a bit now… I think I’ve figured it out but it has to be a combo of characters. I’m too ..uhm.. something.. to just pick one.
I have the thinking style of Greg House, the personal strength/vulnerability combo of Eve Dallas, the observational nature of Holden Caufield, the dutiful nature of M’Lynn Eatenton (Steel Magnolias), the healing of Gwen Cummings (28 Days) and the belief in all people to become what you least expect of them like Sam Dawson (I am Sam). Downside- I have the ability to be the weirdest person in the room like Allison Reynolds (Breakfast Club) and I exist in my own personal reality while sometimes missing the big picture like Jin (Samurai Champloo).
sorry that was so dang long
People who say House make me smile. I’m a Wilson. :)
Another fictional character I identify with is Deitrich on Barney Miller.
@filmfann – I had a crush on Dietrich when I was 7.
I have always seen myself in Will Parry(His_Dark_Materials) for the longest time.
Now, I’m just not too sure. I’ve grown a lot within the last year.
