As a work of visual art, what album/CD cover art is the best ever?

Asked by davidk (1432points) November 17th, 2009

Have you ever noticed the amazing diversity of album cover art? Some is incredible because of the detail. Others are stunning for their visual impact, like a great piece of advertising or propaganda.

Pick “the best album cover of all time,” and give a reason(s) why.

Tool’s 10,000 Days album art is AMAZING, and it won the 2006 Grammy award for best packaging.
It’s very detailed, innovative (includes glasses), and represents the band’s live visuals.

I dunno about the best, but Soulwax‘s Nite Versions is pretty cool, and maybe Hail to the Thief.
Also, F♯A♯∞ is very apt to the content of the record.

Electric Light Orchestra – Out Of The Blue (1977)

Led Zeppelin – Houses Of The Holy (1973)

@Likeradar Man, the album art was pretty good, but I suppose I’m prejudiced because I was disappointed so much with the actual content of the album.

@rangerr All of Jimmy Eat World’s album art is great!

Likeradar's avatar

@Drawkward It’s not their best work, but after a few listens it really grew on me.

@Drawkward @Likeradar I liked the artwork more than the music. Even after listening to it for a few weeks.

I’ve always liked Rusted Root’s album covers.
Rusted Root.
Stereo Rodeo.
Remember.
When I Woke.
Welcome To My Party.

Radiohead’s Kid A is pretty damn amazing. The actual cover is cool, but all the booklet artwork, and even more so the hidden booklet under the disc, are awesome. If you own it, I’m sure you know what I mean.

These 2 album covers form the band Brand New

The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me
Daisy

I’m not sure what it is about them, maybe just the simplicity, but I really like them.

@forestGeek as much as I enjoy Kid A, I like Hail’s or OK’s art much better.

Great album cover is Primal Scream’s Screamadelica nice and simple yet striking with no pesky text and then of course who can forget The Stone Roses first LP

@Drawkward some of the Soulwax single covers are better than Nite Versions, although along the same lines NY Excuse should I take the sticker off?

I really liked the Allman Brothers Eat a Peach album cover. (I’m old.)

Would have to pick two. The Point by Nilsson and Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division.

In the court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, was the popular album to have in front of your stereo.
My personal favorite was Sgt Pepper, because it broke a lot of rules, just as an album cover.

i don’t really like cream but i absolutely love the cover of wheels of fire. my mum gave me her old album when i got a record player, and i don’t really play the record often, but i do admire the art pretty often.

Crack the Skye.
Mastodon has some very amazing artwork, it’s a real shame that the only album of theirs that I enjoy is Crack the Skye. I can’t get into their previous ones.
I know @pretentiousartist is going to hate me for that

This classic KISS is amazingly effective art for its non-political propaganda value

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is one of my favorites.

I also like this Dracula one, even if it is Philip Glass (whose music I do not care for).

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has great art, such as this one.

And the Mirrormask soundtrack has cover art that fits the movie without being the main character. Here.

Oh how could I forget, but any artwork from a Rudimentary Peni record (or Nick Blinko for that matter) is amazing!
