Is brushing your teeth in the shower really that bad?

I brush my teeth in the shower while I’m letting the conditioner set in. I’ve done this for a few years now, but my mom just figured it out today and went bonkers about it.
Is it really that bad?

I don’t see why it would be bad at all? Why does it matter where you brush your teeth?
I do it too, every morning. What’s her reason for being so against it?
Yea, why does she think it’s so bad?
Do you have a lot of cavities or something? I think showering and tooth brushing saves time and energy!
She said it was unsanitary.
I do that too…didn’t know it was a problem…
I do it all the time. Its only if you leave your toothbrush at crotch level or something that it would be “unsanitary.”
@rangerr No, it is not unsanitary unless you’re peeing on your toothbrush ;P
Keep doing what you’re doing and DON’T tell your mom about your private moments any more.
Unsanitary? You’re cleaning yourself for god’s sake!
@avvooooooo Nah, it’s in a toothbrush case when it’s not being used.
@SpatzieLover She figured it out on her own. She “wanted to see if I needed a new toothbrush” and couldn’t find it.
This seems quite silly to me. I have, on several occasions, brushed my teeth in the shower. It saves both time and water, and honestly, if your mother is really that worried about it being “sanitary”, then it’s probably time for her to clean the shower.
@rangerr How old are you? Sound’s like mommy wants to baby you.
@rangerr Yup. Mom’s feeling the nest getting ready to empty. What you do in the bathroom is no longer your mom’s business.
Maybe she was a little freaked out by the bacterial content of a mouth and the concept of spitting in the shower? I still dunno. She sounds kinda bonkers.
I think the only thing that could be really unsanitary is the water going into your mouth from the showerhead.
@jfos How? My shower head filters. Even if hers doesn’t it’s no different than a tap.
Toothbrush case? Is your toothbrush able to dry inbetween brushes? That could be unsanitary? Maybe that is what she was upset about and you misunderstood?
Maybe if you share it with a bunch of people. Otherwise I don’t think so. In fact the only reason I probably don’t do it is that anything other than ice cold water in my mouth while brushing seems nasty to me. I couldn’t brush my teeth with warm or hot water.
At least you don’t relieve yourself in the shower.
You can take relieve any way you want.
@rangerr You’ll be leaving soon enough. Chalk it up to mom looking for things to “mom” you about and keep doing whatever works best for you.
@rangerr You’re 18, you’re almost out. I say just do what she wants even if she is nuts. Some of my favorite stories about my mom is how neurotic and unreasonable she is at times.
Brushing my teeth in the shower seriously grosses my husband out lol. And he has many more gross habits than I do!
I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s not unsanitary. I don’t do it anymore, since we have Sonicare toothbrushes and I keep it out of the shower. Plus, we should have a window sill to keep it on like we used to :(
@rangerr Sorry, same statement, different gender! LOL!
@avvooooooo Either way, I don’t do any of the things that could be covered by that statement. In the shower.
tell your mum you asked a retired dmd about it and the answer was it’s fine to brush your teeth anywhere!
HELL NO. I am a huge fan of brushing in the shower. I let the shampoo sit in my hair for a few minutes so I mine as well be giving my teeth a thorough brushing! I think more people would like this if they gave it a try…I’ve recruited quite a few people to this style of brushing and all are satisfied clients.
Unsanitary? Noooo. I don’t see a problem with it. We take showers to clean our bodies. What’s wrong with cleaning your teeth while you’re at it?
I brush in the shower, too. It saves time.
Unless you accidentally get conditioner in your mouth, what’s the problem? And even that’s not unsanitary – just bad tasting.
So many good points about brushing in the shower…and yet people still find ways to hate on it. Mindblowing, absolutely mindblowing.
lol
@SpatzieLover I read somewhere recently that bacteria can build up over time in showerheads. And that if it does, it can be harmful if ingested.
@jfos that can happen on the bottom of the faucet in the sink also.
I brush my teeth in the shower. This makes me awesome. ;) Hey, it is time management!
It never occurred to me before to try brushing my teeth in the shower. Sounds like a good idea, especially while waiting to rinse out the conditioner (since I leave it in longer than it takes me to shave my legs & pits).
@jfos You mean the same bacteria that builds up inside faucets? The same faucets that we use to brush our teeth outside the shower and drink out of? Yeah, those.
The amount of water actually ingested while brushing teeth in the shower is minimal for most people since its used to rinse and spit and generally doesn’t go further than the mouth.
I just got my teeth cleaned today and the hygienist was telling me that they now make a water pik for the shower. Someone is thinking about dental hygene and showers on a commercial level too!
Tell your mom, that there are two things that you can do in the shower while the conditioner sets in. One is brushing your teeth.
My wife brushes her teeth in the shower. I’m cool with it because her toothbrush is always handy if I need to clean my toenails.
Brushing your teeth in the shower seems more sanitary than just doing it at the sink, if you brush your teeth at the sink your brushing with feces on your brush no way around it unless there isn’t a toilet in the room, may still be while brushing in the shower to but probably less likely..
Just don’t bathe in the sink! That would be just wrong…and sort of cramped!
I do it too, maybe she misunderstood thr fact that you were brushing your teeth with conditioner and not toothpaste…..
I’ve been a “shower brusher” for years. Folks either get it or are repulsed.
<shrug>
Wow never hear this one before lol. You seem to be pretty clean about it so i see no probleem with it….
Only objection i have is you using hot water to brush your teeth… Yucky! in my eyes lol.
I think it’s a bad practice, not because of sanitary reasons, but because of water waste.
If you’re running the shower the entire 2 minutes (or however long) you’re brushing your teeth, without actually using it until you’re done, that’s quite a bit wasted.
Here in SoCal we actually have ads regarding water waste. The one I see is a guy in the shower, washing his body (with… I think it’s called a pouf), and then shampooing, and then you see him start shaving, and then brushing his teeth, then you see him start talking on the phone, “yeah.. yeah, no, I’m in the shower!”. And then the narrator says something like “wasting water is just stupid. Our reserves are at an all-time low”.
I’m occasionally guilty of shaving my face in the shower. But not consistently. Our sink is pretty fucked up, I get tired of it sometimes.
If you want to do it, I don’t care, but you will not catch me letting the head of my toothbrush touch any surface. I’m far too aware of bacteria being everywhere and I really want to avoid putting them in my mouth. I personally don’t do it because of that, you have to set the toothbrush somewhere, and also because I don’t like brushing my teeth with warm water.
@Sarcasm I think most people do this while they’re washing their hair… So they’re kind of using it and not really wasting water.
Ask your mom about cause and effect. I see none.
Don’t see anything wrong with that if water pressure to the shower head is turned off while you are brushing.
