Good GPS camera?

Asked by Supergirl (1696points) November 18th, 2009

My dad wants to get a camera with built-in gps. They do a lot of traveling abroad, and think it would be great. I have Googled, but surprisingly few helpful links have come up. Anyone have one of these? I am not interested in the detached gps or software that is separate from the camera.

I have not used these but just went looking to give you a start.
-Ricoh 500SE http://www.mapc.com.au/ricoh-500se_71.html
-Nikon Coolpix P6000 http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-nikon-coolpix-p6000-price-122428-2901546.html

But as this is relatively new, don’t expect an abundance of choice. I would actually get the GPS add on with a nice DSLR until the built in technology has been perfected.

the above are in fact the only two models sold in the US wiht built in GPS. I suspect it is because battery life would fall dramatically if people used it on every shot.

If you don’t want to be stuck with a camera that takes poor images but has a GPS you should consider an eye-fi SD card.

It’s an SD card that has WiFi, and GPS crammed into it! I think only the explore and pro have unlimited GPS at the moment. It’s definitely worth a look though!

I had a Sony HX5V which is a wonderful camera and includes GPS.

However, I recently got a Canon PowerShot S100. It is unbelievable. It is one of the smaller cameras yet it packs an incredible punch. I used it recently on a trip across Europe and it is a fantastic traveling camera.

Check my Europe photos here http://www.flickr.com/photos/gdada (past the first 6, all Europe photos were taken with the canon) . I used the S95 in my trip, which you can find for about $290. but the S100 came out a few weeks ago and it includes GPS capability.

This camera is so good, that I hardly use my Nikon DSLR anymore
