Is there a right and wrong way to pick up a cat?
I usually pick up Berthe (my cat) by putting a hand under her chest and another under her belly. But this made me think..
Wouldn’t it hurt to be partially picked up by the stomach?
Anyway, was just curious if there was a better way to do this that maybe wouldn’t put pressure on her in uncomfortable places.
(I’m really probably reading too much into this, I know, I know.)

Yeah your readng into it too much. One under the chest and one under the bum or tum is fine. Scruff her if you feel the need. She will let you know if your doing something wrong. It is more the chest support that she needs. If you don’t get bit or hissed at then she is all sweet.
Right: chest, under the hind legs, or stomach
Wrong; by the ears, tail, or whiskers
@holden – The mental image of someone picking a cat up by the whiskers is pretty mind boggling! hehehe.
As long as your cat isn’t complaining when you pick her up, I would say you are probably doing it just fine.
Thanks for the answers. & @rooeytoo , I wouldn’t worry. My cat never stops purring. Except for when she sleeps. :)
I just checked. The cat will let you know if you are fucking it up. I should probably go give the cat a can of tuna.
Cats are lighter. If you picked a person up that way, their weight wouldn’t be as evenly distributed on your tiny arms as a small, lightweight cat’s would.
Please do not pick up your cat by its legs, as it finds this as a very uncomfortable mode of transit.
Pick up the cat when it’s deep in sleep and it will lurve you forever.
I find that if you offer to buy her a drink after using a line such as, “Do you have a sunburn or are you always this hot?” often works. A little scratching behind the ears and before you know it you’re in there!
I can tell you from personal experience that “by the tail” is incorrect. Other than that… JP is right. The cat will let you know if you’re doing it wrong.
@pinkparaluies My orange cat purrs all the time too, if you just look at him he’ll purr.
I often pick up my cat the way you described or with one hand under her chest and the other under her back legs/hips. I also pick her up under her two front “arm pits” and put her over my shoulder like a little kid – I tend to do this if I am holding her while walking.
The cat will let you know.
