I think it is a big step forward but I don’t think they will really do anything to Window’s or OS X’s market share. I am looking forward to trying it. It looks very interesting.
I always thought that in the future we would be booting up our computers online! Let’s see how this goes.
I’ve been thinking about it. I am at a point where I’ll need to wipe my hard drive here anyway, I might partition it and try the Chrome OS.
I like the browser, but it usually causes my system to stick. I have other issues with which I’m dealing, but that’s another story…
Edit: I just checked out the links above and noticed a) It isn’t going to be available for at least a year; and b)You need to use it with a ChromeOS device. You won’t be able to install it in place of windows.
So, My answer will be probably not, unless I happen to get a device (netbook, laptop, etc) that is a ChromeOS device.
It will run only on very specific hardware, they don’t plan to have a downloadable OS you can put on some random PC. So it’s like asking “do you plan on using the Palm OS?” or “do you plan on using the Blackberry OS?”
The question is, “Will you buy a Chrome OS device?”
The vast majority of people never buy an OS alone, they always buy the machine. So we’ll have to wait and see how Google OS hardware appeals to consumers compared to netbooks and iPhones.
If it means I never have to help someone’s virus-riddled Windows install because they never bothered to upgrade IE to a more secure version (or a better browser) then I’m happy. I detailed my thoughts on it in this short post a while back.
I plan on trying it. In a virtual machine. And then returning back to Ubuntu so I can use, say, the Gimp. Though I might see myself using it more and more. At least, if you can use your own server for storage. (But then again, look what I’ve stored with Google now…)
Honestly, not for much more than something to play with. Too much of Google OS requires the internet, and I rely pretty heavily on offline programs.
It’s not intended for desktops, and FWIW, that’s where I mainly work form. Pass.
I was waiting excitedly to use this side-by-side with Windows on my desktop, but apparently that’s not possible in the near future.
When the final release comes out, will I be able to run the Chrome OS using VMWare player as well?
i think i am really excited about it because im pretty sure that google chrome is the greatest thing since sliced bread… google is a powerful company with great technology and im surprised that its taken so long for a browser and OS from them (that i know of). a little skeptical that an entire OS can live up to the browsers simplicity and speed… am a little disappointed that it is aimed towards netbooks, etc. IF THEY CAN STICK to the simplicity, it will all go a long way; that is, if as it develops and becomes more popular and they try to add features etc that users are requesting, they do not allow it to become bogged down with a lot of unnecesary extras. i will be trying out the OS as soon as i can… but as to whether it can replace windows 7… i don’t know. we shall see.
