How does music affect society? Does it cause people to do certain things? to feel a certain feeling? What would we be without music today?

I do not know about society as a whole but I can tell you that music helps inspire me in both my art and when I have home chores to do.

In the 70’s there was a call to ban some rock and roll claiming that it was inspiring teens to commit suicide. When I am back to my home computer I will try to find a link for you.

I am looking up random articles to see if any will help you.

Here is one from The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

Here is one article on a lawsuit regarding teen suicide.

Here is a link to the story I was thinking of.

What is the truth about rock music? Music is a powerful and perhaps the most powerful medium in the world. Plato said, when the music of a society changes the whole society will change. Aristotle, a contemporary of Plato said, when music changes there should be laws to govern the nature and the character of that music. Lenin said, the best and the quickest way to undermine any society is through it’s music. Music ladies and gentlemen was a gift from God. It was given by man to offer praises to God and to lift us up to him and to exhalt him and so we’d be touched in the tender recesses of our hearts and our minds. Satan has taken music and he has counterfitted it, convoluted it, twisted it, exploited it and now he is using it to hammer, hammer, hammer, hammer, hammer a message into the minds and the lifestyles of this generation.

This is a great question! There’s a book that I just started reading, This is Your Brain on Music by Daniel Levitin. It’s about the neurological effects of music on your brain. The author started out as a music producer, and became a neuroscientist at McGill University. The need to make music and keep a beat is hardwired into us.

@PandoraBoxx keep a beat? Does this mean we all have to do this god I hope not

PandoraBoxx's avatar

@RareDenver the fact that you found it on youtube and posted it says it’s true.

@RareDenver I believe that. In the 60’s we sang about peace, love and understanding. A generation used Love as it’s mantra. A revolution came, and changed the world.
Now, we have rap, and the music, and thusly the mantra of the world has become hit a bitch, kill a pig, sell a bag of dope. No wonder we are a mess.

@filmfann what I had written was completely sarcastic and a sample from a record, I am involved in the creation of some of the most degenerative music and behaviour known to man kind

@RareDenver – Thank you for the laugh.

@RareDenver Then I agree with the speaker you sourced.
As far as degenerative music and behavior, I grew up in the 60’s, and was a part of the 70’s punk culture. I would love to hear what you think is something new.

RareDenver's avatar

@filmfann don’t be so pretentious, every generation has it’s thing

RareDenver's avatar

@filmfann I grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I was really into the punk scene that had come before me, I embraced all my parents mistakes and made them my own, then added a few for good measure. We all live the same life just with different gadgets!

RareDenver's avatar

@filmfann well I guess I also grew up in the 70’s too having been born in ‘76 but then I was only interested in lego and shit but as my dad was a DJ I guess I picked up the DJ / music bug

What happened when the Titanic was sinking? The musicians came on the deck and played until they couldn’t anymore. Being able to knowingly make music (and create art) is one of the abilities that marks us as human.

Music makes people smarter and more social. It’s one of the best means to prevent and reduce crimes.

laaaa's avatar

but what about music such as horror choir?
the people sing about killing! @mattbrowne i’m not saying your wrong, but there is music that does not ‘prevent’ crimes.

mattbrowne's avatar

@laaaa – There are exceptions. Dumb and too aggressive music/amalgam of noise does indeed not have this effect. I was talking about sophisticated music with melodies and interesting harmonies and without too many repetitions of very short snippets. There is even sophisticated metal like Within Temptation.

Music affects society in a deep way. It alter moods, talks to people (the lyrics can be relative), it can help people get thru rough times, it can set moods (music in movies), it can make things seem better and add more life to it…music is very important overall.
